Ok here is the deal, Next to the office where I work is a very big and very tall Pecan tree. Looms over our work vans. Today the owner decided that he was tired of seeing resin from this tree all over his vans. So he's having it brought down. I could ask for the tree but is it going to be worth the 60 or so I spend in gas to get it all hauled home. I have to stack it ddry it, split it etc. Never used pecan. IS IT WORTH THE TROUBLE IF HE GIVES IT TO ME.

So, it's located at your place of work... So I guess you don't have a truck and a chainsaw, huh? So you have to pay to have it hauled? That sucks. Still worth it, though. I'd pay $60 for a pecan tree easy.

$60 only buys me ten little bags of Weber Hickory or Mesquite here.

Go for it.

I pay $85.00 for a pickup load of oak, and that's in my pickup with me driving it and paying for the gas. Heck of a deal if you ask me.

Yep well worth it. Main wood I use, of course it's free to me. But I would pay that to save me the trip I have to make to go get it.

For Gods sake man, I'm about to drive down there and get the damn tree myself!
Cut it up, chunk it, and sell it at garage sales or something to earn some of your $60 back.

I see you all feel strongly about pecan. I will ask for the tree. It has to be brought down from the top. But if I haul it away it will save my employer some money. And he really likes to save money. Chances are pretty good.

Pecan is my favorite wood! It is a great wood for anything smoked... Just be sure to split it while still green! It is a mutha to split once cured...

There is a pecan orhard here in town and I got a good relationship with the owner. I get all the pecan I want for free. He marks what trees he wants removed and I make it happen. Pecan is an excellent wood and even better when you harvest it yourself.

I'll know in the morning about the tree. I had ment to get a picture of this thing so you could get an ideal of the size of this thing. But if given, You all will see soon enough.

Hey, where in T-Town is it at? I'd be glad to drive down and give you a hand cutting and splitting. Or if you realize how crappy that old pecan is I'd be glad to swap you a truckload of cut hickory and oak for it....

Seriously I'm in southern shelby co. and T-town is a quick trip for me if you want some help.

He hasn't decided yet if he will take down, reason being the amount of money they want to charge to bring down from top.waiting

How high is it? In a bad place, that is structures that it could fall on? Is he willing to let joe blow come and cut it down or does it have to be a pro? Where is it at in Tuscaloosa? ( I just moved from there about 3 years ago)

9th street, that's on campus. Tell him he can either pay for it now, or deal with the headache when it is an insurance claim. Lord knows that Tuscaloosa has had (and will continue to have) its share of bad weather. Good luck, and I hope you get the wood, you won't be sorry.

Tree comming down tommorow. I am only going to get what my ranger xlt will hold. I offered 100.00 for the guys cutting the tree if they would haul it 12 miles from office to my house. Turned me down, said they were too pressed for time. He did say if I put my truck close by he would load it with however much it will hold. I guess it's better than nothing at all. I'll have to take what I can get, stepped on the wrong toes yesterday and in a little trouble with employer anyway.

Hi y'all. Since this turned into a bit of a discussion on varieties of smokin wood, how does cherry fit into the flavor profile? I just picked up some oak and saw that cherry was more expensive. Is it worth it?

And Jsimons0, what is that place on Halsted and where else can we get wood around ChiTown? My oak I picked up in Valpairaso while I was there.

Thanks!

YES IMO, I use Cherry and apple with a small amount of hickory for chicken, ribs, and butts. Has always done very well, gives meat a great flavor.

Nuthin wrong with that score!

Let it dry about 4-6 months or so in a well ventilated dry environment, split it (or split and chunk it) and COOK ON!

Great stuff!

And, if you run out--come on down.
Mrs Kapn burns Pecan for firewood down here.

Thought about going ahead and cutting it in the lenths I will need for my new Klose Pit, splitting and then letting start to dry. Or should I wait til it seasons then cut up. Chime in let me know which is best IYO.

Speeds up the drying process to split early.

How about posting your cooker (s) in your signature line?
Helps others.

Up here in Vermont they say it is easier to split when it is well below feezing and the frozen sap in the wood has expanded.

I guess you don't wanna wait that long for a good hard freeze down there in Florida, huh?

Nice score bro...

I wait until I see cracks forming on the ends of the logs before I split. Can't really give you a reason other than I was told that is how you know it is ready for use.

Just got finish splitting some oak I got from my tree trimmer buddy. It is about pick up load worth. I split it as soon as possible, because it is easier on my equipment and it dries faster!

TexasGuppie
05-19-2007, 08:55 AM
No, it's NOT! I would suggest cutting it up, splitting it up and stacking it neatly by the road (preferrably with easy access) and then email me directions. I will take time out of my busy schedule to pick it up and dispose of it properly. You do NOT need the headaches of this worthless wood. I don't mind helping you out, I mean, that's what I'm here for, right?

Yeah, me too. Third one this year. Man I hate that word of mouth thing. Like "hey, if you want get rid of your apple tree that dumb guy Kevin will cut it down, take all of the wood and clean up the mess for nothing". I'm dumb like a fox. If you understand that expression your too old. Like me.
