I have been thinking of adding magnetic handles to the center section of my new WSM.

Here is one possibility:

Does anyone see any reason not to order them to try?

Heat might destroy or weaken the magnets?
Plastic on handle might melt?
Not strong enough?

The black color and size is nice.

Heat will effect the magnetism. 25lb capacity is not much with a full smoker and water.

Definately not.

You seem like a fellow geek, though (if not, I apologize) so check out this site: www.thinkgeek.com (http://www.thinkgeek.com)

Lots of cool geek toys.

HSLS, Those things are $13 a piece, plus shipping you're looking at $30+ for 2 handles that wont work.
Go to Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, whatever the heck you have, find a couple utility pulls or garage door pulls. They can easily be manipulated (bent/adjusted) so the holes line up with the bolts for the rack brackets and mount them permanently. I have 4 handles on each of my WSMs and it ran $8 per WSM.

Just take a 1.00" dia. wooden dowel about 3.00" long and drill
a clearance hole down the center of it for a 1/4-20 screw and
install it with a long 1/4-20 screw through the hole
where the shelf holder is.

They are spaced out at 4 each at 90' so you could pick it up
with 2 at 180' from each other.

If you want to expand on that you can make a handle the
same way using the other screw holes.

There are 8 screw holes that you can mess with and not have to
worry about magnets slipping.

2 butts, 18lbs
2 gallons water in water pan 14 lbs. Thats 32 lb and not including the weight of the wsm section and racks.

2 ceramic drawer pulls from Home depot work well and cost about 3 bucks each.

WTF happened to a plain ol pair of gloves? A Nieman Marcus WSM - what's next?

TK....It will be in the catalog for Xmas :-P

Just a thought....I can't remember ever picking up the center portion
when it was hot nor why I would do that .... Oh well

I have no handles on mine. i use a pair of welder gloves and have moved my WSM hot several times. Ive lifted the center portion off and placed it back on and have even grabbed by the rim of the bottom portion and moved the entire WSM while it was loaded. works fine. plus i dont take away from the stream line appearance of my cooker

Good advice bros, thanks -- I suspected as much, just thought it was a quick no-drill possibility. There are stronger ones, but I don't see that it is worth it.

I'm gonna go without any handles for a bit and see if I even need them.

I appreciate the input.

(And, yes, I am a tech geek too.)

What Harbormaster said...those garage door handles work great.
