Well since I have the days off already, My wife and I have decided to throw our hat in the ring and give it a shot. My family and friends have said my stuff is good but now it shall be put to the test. This is my first offical contest so I am a little nervous but excited all at the same time.
As long as I do not come in dead last, I'll be happy.
I'll see you Brethren when you get here.

It's a really good, fun contest. This will be our third year there. We'll look forward to meeting you, and if there is anything Eric or I can help ya with there please let us know.
Its a good little contest. I have done it the last 2 years and I look forward to it next year. I might visit it this year.

Puppyboy - As Greg said if you need any help at all just let one of us know. The Meatheads will be there - should be on the back side of the skating rink. Oh and stop by for a margarita - it will be the debut for the new and improved version.

Ditto the rest of the sentiments - We'll be in our normal spot across from the 4H bldg. Hollar if you need anything. If you are able to navigate away from the margarita machine, We'll have something cold and loaded as well:twisted:
Dont believe anything Aaron, Jeff, or Cawby tell ya... We're completely and totally sane

Way to go Rob! Glad to hear your gonna compete. This is going to be our first comp too. Hey all you seasoned Brothers, do they have something like "Rookie Row" or something like that? How do you get assigned a spot? Just get there early enough to pick?
HoDeDo
03-05-2007, 09:15 PM
Todd- I bet if you have a spot that you wanted that is not already taken from a previous year's returning team, you could just email Corey Linton and ask for it... The Folks that run the Osage contest are great. They have always been very nice to us. Our first year, we had the water pump in the motor home crap out. A gal came by on a golf cart and asked if we had any problems - and she went and got the wrench we needed / silicone tape. Talk about above and beyond -- They are great. We didnt ask for it - she just showed back up with it, a very pleasant surprise.
Corey Linton is the organizer - email him and see if you can pick a spot... or you will get it in your packet.

you might have Corey place you OUTSIDE of the triangle between Wayne, Scott, and I.... Sounds like it might be the BAR-muda Triangle 8-)

Good luck at your first comp. Just make fun your first goal. If you can, everything else is extra and you'll have a blast.
The best thing you have going for you is a the group of Brethren that have already offered you a hand getting you started.

I am so stoked about doing this. I appreciate all the offered assistance. Fun is my main goal as is meeting as many Brethren as possible. I'll have a cooler at my location as well. Man I gotta pace my self so I don't turn in jerky.

Having fun has got to be the first goal in your first competition. I stepped into the ring last year and this group was very instrumental in making my first competition a success. Look through the site and you will find everything you need to have a successful competition.
First Goal - Have Fun
Second Goal - Meet those turn in times
Third Goal - Enjoy the experience
Good Luck!

Thanks Jeff for the info. I went to the site and I believe you were in F10 and MoKan was just across from you. I emailed Corey to see if he could make that work.
Good luck in Jeff city...

Well I'm really looking forward to being there to help Theresa with Todd and whoever else needs a hand.
And I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in person!

Sounds like there will be a lot of Brethern there - I am looking forward to it. KC Jake has been in F11 the last few years but if you guys could get close to F5 (I think that is where we will be) it would be great and we could help you out in any way possible.
Only 41 teams entered this year. Looks like alot of teams left for Jefferson City. There were 67 last year.

42 now and still over a month away - they will get full. Come on out and cook Clay!
I talk to Corey. I can sign up until the 30th so if the wife goes early I might just be there.

I signed up my team today. I talked to Cory and briefed him on the Brethren. Looks like several of us will be between the skating rink and aquatic center. That's great, now I know I will not need to stumble too far away from my fire. Oh and I saw the aprons too. They are pretty neat.

I emailed Corey and he was able to slot me into F10 where Jeff and Big Creek was last year, which is right across from F5 and MoKan. If F11 is open Puppyboy, maybe you could get that spot? I'm so stoked about our first Solo Comp, I'm going to start practicing in the back yard this weekend. Got my EZ ups this week and going to put the sides on the trailer and get it fitted with a tarp.
I have this great list of what to take to a Comp from a story Elizabeth Lumpkin put up on KCBS. It's a word document. I'll attach it here if I can. I found it very helpful.

Hawgs-
When I talked to Cory yesterday, I asked him to put me next to you so we could have a little "Rookie Row". He wrote it down and said he could make it happen bacause he had a lot of space to work with. He said his goal was 70 teams this year.
I practiced a 9# brisket Weds. I pulled it off at 185* internal and left it rest an hour. I was happy but still want to tweek the flavor. Next week, I practice the chicken.

Looks like the Brethern will be a plenty at this comp. Were gonna be across from MoKan and Puppyboy is next to us. Sounds like more Brethern will be in that area. I wonder if were gonna be able to get our Brethern Banners in time so we can fly the colors?...

Just got an email from Corey at Osage City. It included a map with space assignments. Looks like there will be several brothers in the same general area. We had asked for our old spot but I guess it didn't exactly work out for them. Hope I have enough 12 gauge code for the Margarita machine.

Do you guys side your cookers under your tarps or just add more fuel to maintain temps?

It was like working my butt off in a meat locker. (It was REALLY cold!)
But it was worth it. Goal was to have fun - and that I did!
It was great to put some faces to the names around here.
AND - Huge Congrats to the Mo-Kan Smokers who managed to up their game to grab Reserve Grand Champions! [applause] Way to go guys!
And a special thank you to Bruno who is Hawg's bro-in-law. He was going to meet them at their house to help unload the smokers, etc. so I could head straight for the hacienda here in Larryville. I'm here now . . . and boy! I am tired. But it's that Good Tired when you've just been through a challenge and managed to survive intact.
Nice margarita machine, Wayne!

Got to meet Hawgsnheifers and Puppyboy - and good to see everyone else. I'll post some pics of our snow/rain/hail/thunderstorm.
I think the final official count was 7 inches for us. The first several that fell melted into a slurry with the rain from the previous 5 hours.
Congrats to the MoKan boys!!! Reserve Grand Champs

I'm am dead tired but it's a good tired. If it weren't for Brother Dave and his bacon, sausage and eggs cooked in a cast iron skillet on the Dera this morning, I may have packed up and called it quites. But after it's all over I know that it has to get better than this. Fighting snow so big the flash from my camera made it look like a UFO, to temps in the low 30's, wind and accumulating snow on the easy up, we made it through. Here are just a few pics I thought I would share. I have to say that I'm a little dissapointed with the results. Brisket has been one of my strong suits with lots of folks telling me that it tastes fantastic. The number add up but 45th out of 60? David's chicken took 16th and my ribs, which I have to admit were overcooked got 52nd with pork, which is what I would consider my weak area coming in 32nd. Oh we'll. Next time hopefully the weather will cooperate.
Congratulations to Mo Kan Meatheads on Reserve. You guys have definatly worked hard to get it there and today the Judges confirmed it. Thanks for the pointers on the presentation box.

I would agree Kapn. I don't think this years Polor Swine had anything on us except maybe some colder temps. Snow was so heavy it bend some of the cross supports on the EZ up just a bit. Good thing I didn't opt for the cheap EZ ups. Probably would have been down under the weight.
Funny thing was 30 miles to the north, no snow, and I think down south of the comp, no snow. We're so lucky....:icon_sleepy

Thanks, Kapn - but my vote for the REAL "Survivor" was Puppyboy and his crew. They were doin' it Hard Core style with just a few tarps hooked up to his pickup for cover.
At least I got the cushy assignment of sleeping in Todd's camper!
Congrats to all for surviving - holy smokes!
An extra big congrats to all who walked, and especially the Meatheads.

Congrats to all that survived this contest. What a mess with the weather. Smoking in the Spring? I don't think so. Maybe next year.
Great job to Wayne and the gang. Besides being great brothers, you make a mean Margarita. Thanks for sharing your new technique for brisket. Always a pleasure to see you.
Nice seeing Andy again, but where the fark was your tent? I coundn't find it in the snow.
Got to meet Puppyboy and the gang. Good job with your first comp. I know that you learned a lot and will be better prepared next year. I see an EZ up in your future.
Special thanks to Todd and Dave. Your hospitality was great. I really enjoyed learning about the BBQ Guru from Todd. Cool tool for sure.
Note for Poobah: Get these farkers a banner for crying out loud. Not a single one was there. I know, I know that you are busy but these guys need and want to fly the colors.

Well I got my first comp under my belt.
It was more of "Survivor: Osage City" than Smoke in the Spring. We got pounded with rain and snow on Friday, and on Sunday I got a sunburn while working in the yard. That figures.
I was pleased to meet several brothers this past weekend.
I was able to put faces to names. My crew was right across from Hawgsnheifers & QansasjayhawQ. Having met Hawgs before, it was nice not being alone on "rookie row".
The Meatheads were up the way. Wayne is an outstanding guy and I appreciate his hospitality towards my crew. The margarita machine lived up to what I have read. Thanks again for the tips.
Bigdog braved the eliments and drove a few hours to just hang out and meet some brothers.
I saw HoDeDo Friday night but was not able to actually meet him until Saturday afternoon.
SinginBob introduced himself Saturday after the awards.
I wish we could of spent a little more time together but the weather was taking it's toll on my "shanty" and I needed to pay a lot of attention to it.
I believe Hawgs has some pics so I'll post them when I get them.
As far as results go here is where I ended up:
Chicken- 39th of 60
Ribs- 20th of 60
Pork- 55th of 60
Brisket- 56th of 60
Over All- 50th of 60
I thought my chicken would have placed a little higher and was pleasently shocked where my ribs ended up. I was stunned with my pork. The brisket well what can I say, it got what it deserved. I did not put it on early enough and ended up with a 40 minute rest in a cooler. When I sliced it and saw the juices going every where, I knew it was not gonna be good.
Top three lessons learned:
-Start the pork and brisket a few hours sooner, allowing them to rest longer
-A good shelter will keep you dry and warm
-As long as your family likes what you cook, don't sweat the judges
Thanks to all the Brethren for their support, tips, and tricks. Both online and in person.
I have some work to do before my next comp but there will be another and I can not wait.
If anything, this experience fueled my BBQ passion.

Thanks everyone. Yea four calls was awesome - definately a first for us. The call I am most proud of was brisket - been 2 years sionce we had a top 5 in brisket. Cooked two 16 pound briskets in 4 hours (thanks Bubba and Jeff).
Sorry Todd, no Plowboys rub - but did use Dean's sauce on the brisket.
Surprisingly enough the little Lang ran like a champ all weekend, despite the cold and wet conditions. It was great to see everyone again and to meet Puppyboy. Now you know that you can survive mother nature the rest of your contests will be a breeze.
Congrats to Andy and Gregg and Eric on your Chicken calls.

Dang, Wayne. That's a lot of Brisket in a short period of time. That WSM must have been red hot.
I'm pretty damned happy for you guys. What a thrill... and I wasn't even there.
Mean Dean will be pleased to hear that you used his sauce. He's still shocked that you use it on brisket like that.

Plus the Margarita stayed nice and slushy in the cup this year....Oh and that's because of the Farkin Freezin temps in the middle of April...
