This is my plan for my first year:
April - Salisbury,MD
May - Bristol, PA
July - Stevensville, MD
Aug - Hopefully New Holland, PA if I can get in or Bel Air, MD
Oct - Dover, DE

I think that's enough for the first year. I should have a good idea by then if I'm cut out for it.

The Snowshoe (MA) has just been confirmed as March 24th NOT the 10th~! We really didn't want to have it back to back with Grillin' On The Bay but the VFW is booked up on the other dates.

So sorry guys!

Now back to the original question...

I am judging twice in March (Snowshoe MA and Brooklyn NY)
maybe more depending...
Salisbury, MD in April (with a side trip to Six Flags NJ with the Cold Cuts)
Lime Rock, CT in May (hopefully)
Peter's Pond MA, Merrimac NH and Lake Placid NY in June
(back to back to back) eek!
Lincoln NH (possibly) and Harpoon VT in July
Hudson Valley in August
Lowell MA in September
American Royal in October (first time!)
and ... if we get really REALLY lucky...
nope... I'm not saying it... dont wanna jinx it...
the rest of the 'meats will KILL me!

Of course, this could just be me a'wishin' and a'hopin'....

We'll see y'all out there...

lunchlady

p.s. with the exception of Peter's Pond MA...they are ALL at least Sat/Sun events. Some are three (or more with travelling) days. Although I don't have a clue about the Royal.... anyone?

That is funny that Alma, MO is on your list. I love it! I'd love to see 10 more teams there this year. Those folks won't know what hit them. Only five teams the last three years and ribbons through 5th. One day cook (no pork butt), $30 to enter and $10 for Bratwurst open.

That one just doesn't sound fun to me. Every story I've heard is that it is a mad house. Never had anyone say, "You gotta do Lenexa! Our favorite contest. Cooker friendly." Mostly the crowds... not the contest.

For those that do go back each year, what's the appeal?

We went because of the tradition (former teammate was from the area). The two years we cooked it were a disaster, I didn't have that many people walking through my site at the Royal. I'm sure if we would have had a level site away from the middle of the whole mess, it would have been better. It was also hot as hell but thats hard to avoid anyway. As for the management, I would say they were cooker friendly, the crowds however were not. There were some hellacious parties though.

Its a fun contest. I get on the backside of the pond where its a little cololer and less crowded. There alot of teams the do only that or maybe 2 contest ayear. You see Paul Kirk, The Slabs, and Rod Grey did it last year, so there is some definate talent there. 190 teams so its big, triple points. I did it 2 years ago for the 1st time and got a walk. I said I wouldnt want to wait in line for the contest. Well last year the changes it so if you got a call you get a mail in application, so I did it. Last years I said wouldnt probably do as the we got to the last catagory, the misc, well got a walk so Ill probably do it this year. It is a fun contest. Friday night is crazy fun crazy, but crazy. It has its niche contest. Love it or hate it.

Aren't half of the teams grandfathered in, previous winners, the original 12. I've heard That when you're waiting in line there are only 80 spaces available by then. Everyone else is already in.

Rich,
I haven't been to the Ocean City contest, but I agree that adding Dover to your schedule is a good choice. It was a very well run event last year. Vinny, hope to see you at Salisbury.
