Hey guys, you have to put this one on your calender for next year. The sites could not have been better. The staff went out of their way for us, from the buffet at the cooks meeting to the venue. Dover Downs plans to make this one of the biggest events on the east coast and I think this is a very real possibility. They certainly have the facilities and staff as well as cash to make that happen.

The sites all had concrete pade and grass with water, electric and phone lines. We had the good fortune to have an end site with three sites on which no one was assigned, so we had plenty of room to spread out. This will likely not happen again as the event grows, but it was nice for this one.

The wind was a definite factor on Friday and a couple of teams lost their canopy, but the winds died down by 6:00PM and the weather was good after that. I highly recommend this contest to all our "Brethren"

We didn't do so well as far as cooking (19th out of 61), but we had a great time. Congrats to Cool Smoke for their win and every one else. Sorry, I don't have the results to post.

Sounds like a great event Ron.. You're right about having them cash, facilities and staff...

Just looked on mapquest - only 195 miles from my house.... might be a possibility next year to help spread out the dates..

Just got a pic from the comp. I'm the one on the far left and my partner Mark Freidrich next to me. The porta potties blew over Friday afternoon before most people got there. Must have some kind of safety device because there was no spillage, how ever I still wasn't going to be the one to climb in. Maybe I should have, since our finish was kind of chitty.

We were happy with our overall finish 13th out of 62. 8th in chicken. Our rookie season is over and we had some great overall finishes and 7 call ups total. We have met many great people and can't wait for the spring. Ron, Mark has my email address you can get it from him.

Thanks Again to Everyone who gave us a helping hand and welcomed us with open arms.

Ron,

Thanks alot for bringing this contest to our attention. The travel is not too far from Long Island. It sounds like a contest on the verge of becoming great. We will probably do this one next year if there is room for us.

Tom, i dont know if any one here knows what a great job you guy did at dover. When i met you in the pouring raing in salisbury this April , you were still a stuggling young husband and wife team. I knew you guys were special. Congrats on reserved championship. I know you guys are flying high. I so wished i was there to see you walk. I know first hand what it takes to compete and win , especially when you have no sponsors and work a full job. good on you guys

How did it work out with the celebrity judges?

Thanks John! Even without taking the walks we did, Dover was a great event! Anyone who can make this event next year should. They really took care of us and it was just really nice. Yeah my wife and I finally think we are getting this competition thing figured out. We bring the kids and try to make it fun for them as well. John, I hope to talk to you soon and drink some cold ones next year!:-D

The "celebrity judges" were only "celebrities" if you were local and watched the news. Nice people. I think they got a crash KCBS judging class before turn-ins. Just my guess!

hi is that scots the band you are quoting? I work with the lead singers mother in law and had the priviledge to provide a brisket for the birth of their son.

For what it's worth, I spoke with one of the judges and he said that he believed there were about 75-80% CBJ's. That's not too bad for a first year comp.

Yeah John, that's them. You trying to muscle in on my bbq gig with them? :-D
I do a full spread bbq dinner for them every time they come to the Philly area. Been doing it for a couple of years now and it's been a blast. We show up during sound check and lay out the works for them. Ribs, chicken, sausage, sides, cornbread, dessert, the whole shebang.
You work with Sarah's mom huh? Rick and Sarah are good people. We had our first kid about the time their boy Jack was born so Rick and I swap baby stories whenever we get together. Dave and Mary are pretty cool to hang out with too. I have a few interesting pics that I'll post later, don't want to highjack the thread here.

I remember meeting you guys in Salisbury too! I was the one who came around with the coffee, werent you along the tree line? Great showing in Dover...you must be maniacs!!! Hope to see you again in Salisbury next April!

Also, huge props to Tuffy (Cool Smoke) for taking the whole thing...we first met him when he was our neighbor at Pork In The Park in April... way nice guy, he deserves this win. Way to go!

Sounds like Dover gets pencilled in on my 2007 calendar too! I'm gonna have to quit my new job and send the kids to summer camp/boarding school in order to do all the comps we wanna do in '07.
