View Full Version : Long Island BBQ Roadtrip

Wine & Swine
08-24-2006, 02:52 PM
Starting to plan another BBQ crawl after our very successful NYC adventure a few weeks ago. This one will be on Long Island and we plan to hit 4-5 places and will be utilizing a limo again (this way we can maximize our beer consumption) so travel time and mapping will be more essential so we don't spend all the time in the car. I have also taken friends to Texas and have done the same out of Austin into the hill country (stopping in Lockhart the BBQ capital of Texas). That was the best BBQ trip ever, 8 places in 14 hours including Blacks, Kreuz Market and Stubb's in a "Texas Limo" (or crew cab pickup for all you Yankees). Looking for suggestions for Long Island.

Yes I helped Mr. Richter and crew yesterday for this year's BBQ-NYC. Entry was $40 all you can eat and 5 beers from the keg. Great deal. People brought some sides and dessert stuff that was great. We had about 300-350 people there, I'd say. I got to help play with fire a little, cook some beans and mainly slice brisket-- alot of brisket....

It was great-- it was Ward's Island, this year. Pretty strange location-- there's a huge mental hospital nearby and there were all kinds of kooks loitering around.

The crowd from the mental hospital was weird, too....

lots of awesome food was had by all-- deckle, deckle and more deckle as well as sliced pork, drunken pintos, slaw, chicken, pickles, pickled jalapenos, burnt ends, potatoes, onion salad w/ feta, and lots more that I can't shake out of this hangover haze....Loved cooking on that Lang 84 twin-- This side was full of Elgin sausage (regular and garlic) and two kinds of brined trout....Here, Sparky is standing by proudly.

Edit: moderator, this might be better in q talk...up to you....

I spent 2 hours at Willie B's today. That Southern Pride is nice. It's raining buckets, wind is at about 25mph and we are inside smoking ribs. I can see myself just sitting back there during the winter waiting for someone to just open the door to the cooker to get some ribs out.

Good Luck Will.

Glad you guys had fun.... Wish I could have been there...But I was stuck playing servant to my wife who is on crutches and a soft cast with a severely sprained (but luckily not broken ankle).. Twisted her ankle on the sidewalk and heard a "snap". Spent six hours last night at the ER room at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola... four hours just for the x-ray...

My wife got a kick out of Rob calling from Willie B's tonight......

She asked "Who's calling ?" and Rob, in true Brethren fashion replies to her.. "Brooklyn Q".... Gotta love that....

Will - I'll definitely be down there soon enough...... Just keep us posted on the official opening and when the Brethren party is... Oh...maybe that will be anyday a brethen member stops in....nevermind...

Good Luck Willie B's BBQ !!

Glad to hear everything alright, Vinny. Great hospital, though. My 4 yr old son and 2 yr old daughter were both born there. It's within spitting dispance of my house, too. Next time the wife is getting x-ray'd let me know and I'll fire up the smoker! You can tell her you're picking up flowers or something...

Hi,

I had a chance to stop by Willie B's today (and yes, I followed the proper etiquette and brought a 6 pack).

The food I had a chance to taste was great and the location is VERY convenient (one road off both the southern state and sunrise highway). As a matter of fact, you could throw a rock and hit Sunrise Highway.

I see Smoking Al's taking a BIG hit in their sales in the near future.

I plan on being back for the grand opening. Good luck Will!
