And a lurker to boot as we all can see! Found the website a couple of years ago and finally got around to officially signing in. Greetings to all the brethren!.
Checked out our local Grill Kings in 05 at Hecksher, did the KCBS Judge class last April and decided to judge one (GK 2006) before I start getting it together to cook; hopefully next year if all goes well.
Regards to all for now,
Wes. aka Westexbbq

Welcome Wes...

What part of Texas are you from and more importantly what's your opinion on where to find the best commerical BBQ in TX ?

Thanks to all for the welcome!
Anytime I get back to the Lone Star state I try to re-acquaint myself to some of the bbq joints of my mis-spent college days in Dallas. Although I have not had a chance to try it recently, Sonny Bryans on Inwood in Big D was a treat back in the day; Sonny's may be a multi-store chain nowdays but the flagship pit was real good.
A few years back I had a good experience at County Line BBQ up in the hills of Austin; again maybe the chain has expanded so you never can tell for sure.
There is a place in Houston I hope to hit next visit, off the beaten tracks as they say, called Velmas. Once I get there, I will let you all know.
BBQ joints in Texas, like Mexican restaurants, are as plentiful there as pizza parlors and delis are around here, the NY area.
Just recently made the drive from Austin to Houston, where I grew up as a kid, and stopped just outside some town off the highway, followed the sign to an old conveted filling station and had a brisket on a bun with an old 8 oz Dr. Pepper that couldn't be beat; but these types of places are the gold nuggets.
Hope this gives a reasonable response, it is hard to find bad BBQ in Texas!
Thanks again to all for the warm welcome.
Wes
