Watching the first episode of BBQ Pit Wars on TV, I noticed the Big Moe Cason cooked chicken quarters. Anyone else catch that? Anyone else do that?

Of the 70+ contests that I've judged I've only seen leg quarters ONCE.

Did he turn in full quarters though? Perhaps he likes to keep the legs for himself and turns in the thighs but likes the way they cook up together? I saw the show but didn't notice this...

How did he do? I quit watching the show. I know a lot of guys that have tried and failed....

Last year I turned in game hen quarters at 4 comps. As Scottie said..........fail. I thought they were awesome. You can make an awesome box but the judges thought different. How could you get 6 chicken quarters in a box?

yes a top team has been turning in quarters all year...it is a home run or strike out strategy...

Well, he failed! I think he was 41st out of 55 teams. But that could be a combination of different things. I guess I have to worry about cooking a better chicken entry in the first place.

I turned in quarters for 3 comps last year, marginal results. Switched back the the standard and got a first place call. Never again for me, although I really liked the product. I guess I will share a pic since I don't do quarters anymore.

Wow. I thought that was a several year old show. I had no clue that it was only last fall.
Might have to get some new judges for Pitmasters to stay credible if they keep placing far down in the field. :-P

Shencosmoke- how did those legs score? For me personally I don't like looking at the cut off knuckle. It actually grosses me out. Not sure why but it does. I refuse to eat chicken wings with broken bones.

I did watch the entire episode Monday night and I figured moe would have done better. None of them did any good... What did everyone think of the show???

They scored 10-15th place range on average. The same flavor profile got calls once I switched to thighs. I hear you on the bones, the other issue is the judges biting into the knuckle by accident. And the fact that it was a pain the source these because they all had to be smaller and close in size.

man, to me, those leg quarters look terrific. Bone shank or not.

Moe has been cooking in TX a lot lately, so it's probably something he tried to carry over to KCBS.

A team that I used to cook with turned in Game Hen quarters on occasion. You need to find six hind quarters that are all either left or right side so that they'll fit in the box. It was kind of hit & miss on the scores, though - either hero or zero.
