Had the pleasure of supervising my nephew at a backyard comp (not a kids thing) this weekend. He ended up taking 2nd place in front of four KCBS teams. He won a $400 gasser and $100 cash.

great!!

what was the story behind it??

His other grandma saw an advertisement for this contest. It said amateur, backyard BBQ contest. His mom asked me if I would help him with Kid's Q. The was not a kid's q, so I signed him up for the real thing without telling his mom that he was cooking against adults.

Max worked with me to make a couple of BBQ sauces that are just his (from scratch). He made the timeline.

The contest supplied all the meat. Max trimmed it, injected it, applied rub (of his choosing), cooked, foiled, and pulled it at temp. I did help him on the cutting board, but he picked which ribs we turned and I picked the pork for turn in.

1st ribs, 3rd chicken (breast), and 3rd pork.

1st place ribs! OUT Farking STANDING. And despite your assistance, it was ALL him, which makes the accomplishment not only amazing for a kid his age, but amazing even for an adult cook on their first tryout.
