Sounds like they are "ramping up" to a great event
Should be fun, especially for the winner (s).

Gonna tell a tale on PooBah and probably regret it.
But, ya gotta live dangerously sometimes

At Key Largo last fall- DRBBQ was across from us. Not 20 feet away.
Phil was visiting.
Guess what Ray had displayed on his table??????--YUP a gorgeous belt from Grill Kings.
That thing is IMPRESSIVE

I credit Phil for handling it well (kinda) but--he wants that sucker--and he wants it BAD!
And Ray wants to keep it.

Gonna be really interesting

I may just judge this one. If I can score a weber kettle I will grill on Saturday. I may have a sponsorship opportunity from my school, that needs further investigating.

There are one big hindrance to my entering. I factory ordered a new Xterra 4x4 OffRoad edition (the OR has better handling for towing). The truck should arrive in August. So I would need to borrow a truck to move my ceramic cooker, and I also want to make as big a down payment as possible. I figure Grill Kings is a $500 weekend easy.

I still hope to compete somewhere this summer, either at Hudson Valley Ribfest or Lowell Rib n' Brews.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It's coming down to the wire. There's 9 days to go. I heard from Willy B that there are 38 teams registered so far. I am really looking forward to the contest so I can meet some of the Brethren Teams I have not met yet. It should be alot of fun. On behalf of the Two Fat Polocks, we wish you all the best of luck.

Can't wait to pull in and set up .....

Does anyone know the right time that teams can enter the site and check in ?

The cooks packet said 7AM and then an e-mail I received said 5:30AM...
Not sure which is correct.

Phil - Is the "Brethren Row" a lock ? If so, do we need to advise them at check in or do they have these sites set aside for sure ?

yup, i sent dean a note to put us in a row.

Sawdustguy
07-05-2006, 09:21 PM
Vinny,

I am going by what Dean did last year. Last year the site was opened at 7:00 AM Saturday morning for sign in and set-up. Each team was assigned a space by Dean. I sure hope we have Brethren Row so we can all party and socialize together. I am not drinking at all. As a matter of fact I am the only one allowed to touch the cooker after 9:00PM. There will be no fire going out problem or taking meat out early this time. I will start cooking, tend the fire and decide when the meat is ready so there are no screw ups.

Good for you, Guy! No repeats, huh?

Sawdustguy
07-07-2006, 03:34 AM
Yea Jeff, no repeats of Bristol. I feel fine this time and not allow a screwup like that happen again. There is some fierce competition this year and we want to give it our best with no excuses. All we can ask of ourselves is the best we can do and let the chips fall as they may.

I have shipped the Championship belt back to be spit shined and have my name put on it and I had planned to dominate this year and take it with me again, but sadly I'm not going to be able to make it up. So whoever wins, enjoy using my belt for a year but know that I'll be back next year to reclaim it.

It's 90 something and humid as hell every day in Florida, so at least I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Have fun!

FYI to all... I spoke with Dean at the WBAB promo event and asked him about the two times noted for entry. He confirmed he will be there at 5:30AM if any teams want to arrive then. We'll probably get there around 6:30.

We'll see how easy it is. I've got a NEBS meeting tonight, Patron Night at Tremont 647 tomorrow night. Hangover Wedndesday. I need to find time to clean the cookers and trailer and make some injections and such. Of course if I don't get to any of that then we'll be pretty busy saturday !!

This layout sucks. This parking lot is below grade level and a good 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile to the ENTRANCE to the park. So much for an improved venue. We're going to have a view of the Cross Island Parkway and a wall. We won't even hear the horse races.

Honestly Phil, I feel mislead. Past converstations with Dean (the organizer) and past descripitions on the grill kings web site made it sound like the BBQ event was going to be right in the middle of everything with easy access to the horses and the races and bathrooms. Now it's just another parking lot event with porta-potties. Whoo hoo.

Do I absolutely know. No. They may be the rest room trailers that can be rented. Who knows. But the sh*tter situation is only part of the equation. We're back in a parking lot with no shade and nowhere to go.

I finally signed up for the grilling challenge, but I do not think I will be inviting any family. I can only imagine my sister and brother-in-law(the gambler who married in to a good honest family) trying to get my two year old niece make that walk from the contest UNDER Hempstead tpke to the track.

I won't be that hard to spot. I will be the guy with under $100 worth of BBQ equipment, a plastic patio table and a beach umbrella. Oh yeah and a cooler full of beer.

BrooklynQ
07-10-2006, 11:51 PM
Rockaway, it'll be great to see you. Don't worry about your equipment. It's the cook, not the cooker. Just bring plenty of sunblock.

Are you only doing the griling contest?

Rockaway BeachBQ
07-11-2006, 12:10 AM
Just grilling (maybe a little smoke roasting to). I posted my reasons earlier, there is just to much expense and hassle involved in doing the BBQ portion this weekend. I hope to get a free or cheap grill off Craig's list and bring the ECB. Other wise it will be a throw away grill for the pork chops.

Rockaway BeachBQ

I have two questions.

Can we use a gas or electric burner to cook the bbq sauce?

And can we use wood chunks or chips along with the surefire bricks for grilling?

You can use a gas or electric burner for the sauce, and you can use wood chips for the grilling event, but you have to use the purefire as the main heat source is what Dean said. We are spot #36 and my Dad's team is Spot #37.
