View Full Version : Worried about BBQ in Western New York

Man, after last year I was all fired up (pun intended) about 2014 in WNY as the BBQ contests seemed to get bigger and better as the year went on.......starting with over 80 teams at Roc City and finishing with over 70 at the Oink it seemed like there would be more demand this year then ever.

Super Bowl Sunday I get an email saying WNY BBQ/Music Festival (Boston Hills) will no longer be held because the decision was made against it as a fund raiser. This was the BEST contest for cooks you could ever want and run by a first class host. Hope remains Mike can continue with another sponsor but as of now it's off the calendar.

Today I look on the Empire State Championship site and see there are only 4 contests even participating so far........is this normal for this time of year??

I am starting to get bummed out.............please tell me this isn't a trend downward for contests around here because I simply don't have many 4 day weekends to travel far away. It's reasonably local for me or bust.

No problems at all here. Your link works fine, I was just on there checking out the individual contest site links with no issues either.

Don't click on the link, looks like the site got hacked, I'm on it...

Events are still signing up, expect Troy and Hudson Valley soon.

We lost three western NY events this year :-(

Unfortunately team demand doesn't really drive an event. You need big sponsorship or a large public event or a very nice parent organization behind you.

Podunk hopes to be back in 2015. Mike is looking in to other sponsors so hopefully he will be back as well. Also new Canadian BBQ society is expecting to add one or 2 (KCBS sanctioned) contests this season as well.

Any suggestions for possible expansion of our season from WESTERN NY???

Contests around NYC are too far...........looking for 2-3 hour max ride. Anything in PA or OH near the borders???

Canada would be OK although I've never had the pleasure of taking a 26 foot camper out of the country.

Thanks guys.

Being in the NYC area, what about Staten Island getting added?

We still have more events closer to home than most people. This is happening all over the country. Just be glad Honcho made Smokin Eagles KCBS or there would only be 3 contests within 90 miles of Buffalo.
