View Full Version : Pork In The Park 2014?

I know it's early, but just wondering who is planning on competing in this comp this year?

Last year was our first (and 3rd competition overall) time competing in this. We did not have the power, water, mud issues that other teams did, so in general, it was not a bad experience for us. The cold rain all night didn't help, but I know it could have been worse.

Anyways, I was just wondering who might already be in, and maybe what some other folks thoughts were on this event.

Same weekend as Fredericksburg, VA and Green Lane PA this year. We'll be in Fredericksburg.

Last year was our first time there also, and we will be skipping it this year. There wasn't one certain thing that was terrible, except the weather, but we just want to experience other venues.

It's back to back with Middletown (which is Robyn's favorite), so we may do a trailer drop at a friends house to compete in both. Just to save some travel time. No problems with PiP last year.

I was going to do Pork In the Park this year until they moved it to the same weekend as Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg was our first contest ever 2 years ago and we will always go there.

Fred's 31 miles from the house and I don't have to drive on I95 anymore. OTOH, we got beat like a big bass drum and I did drop my pork on the porch that morning, whuich may or may not have had something to do with the results. Oh and I'm still waiting for that promised bag of ice. So who knows what we will do that weekend.

Green lane, Pa for us

Pork in the Park was always a nice contest, but I think they're going to lose some ground this year. Between losing Sandy as the organizer (great gal!) and competing with two other established contest on the same weekend, their head count could possible be the lowest in years. I'd be surprised if they come close to the triple-digit mark.

What happened to Sandy?

What happened to Sandy?

She no longer works for Wicomico County. She's still around and is already listed as the organizer for two contests this year.

Thought the focus shifted last year away from the competitors. We didn't have running water at our section even though we paid the same as the others. I've heard great things about Green Lane, so may try there. Will definitely be at Sandy's othe comps though.

We have been using this as our "shake the rust off" contest for the last couple of years, but we have been doing Green Lane for some time, so would be more likely to cook that. Also the NEBS Polish BBQ Battle is going to be a KCBS event now, also on the same weekend and a lot closer to us. Not sure which of the three we will cook yet, but probably not Pork in the Pork this time.

We did have power problems last year, but as long as we have our RV we are fairly immune to those.

I've heard great things about Green Lane...

You couldn't ask for a friendlier bunch of organizers. Just watch out if it rains, or you too could end up in the photo album on their website. :becky:

BBQ MAFIA will be at Green Lane.

Thanks for the replies, and, I think we are going to Fredericksburg, VA this year. We judged this a few years ago and it looked like a nice set-up. We even got a short minute to meet Tuffy.

I am wondering if they didn't move the PITP event to a later date in hopes of trying to avoid crummy weather. Oh well......

No, they moved it because the weekend they normally hold it is Easter Weekend this year, so they figured competing with two other contests was better than competing with a holiday weekend.
