I started cooking BBQ about 12 years ago, primarily ribs, when I built my first pit, a large offset drum type with a stainless steel firebox. That's right; I built the pit first and then learned to cook BBQ. I thought I know what I was doing until I went to my first BBQ competition (the Jack) in 2008. That opened my eyes to the world of competition BBQ, and how far I had to go (WOW!). My wife and I along with my best friend and his family formed a competition team last year and have been competing in the backyard division at KCBS competitions close to home under the name “q-inator!” We've done fairly well so far and have been fortunate to get a call for at least one category at each of them. We hope to be able to go pro in another season or so, but feel we need more consistency before we make that leap.
