Here's a post from another thread about some places in the Knoxville area which is about 40 miles from Gatlinburg.

Where in the Keys?

Isn't it ALWAYS the last key?

We're visiting the smokies. Just using Gatlinburg as a base for 4 days. Renting a house there. As for the keys, We're staying in Key Colony. Renting a house there too.

Nope - IMO the upper & middle keys (Taverner, Islamorada & Marathon) more enjoyable and better fishing. PS: the last key(s) are the Marquesas and ain't nobody driving a car down there.

Well, all I know is when I'm looking for which key fits the lock, it's always the last...:mrgreen:

OK, it WAS a lame joke, but it was all I had at the time.

Key Colony is a really nice location about a half-hour SW of Islamorada and about an hour from Key West. Jed is point on, don't expect much BBQ, at least, IMO, nothing you would want to pay to eat.

If you are getting a house and you feel like cooking a couple meals (much cheaper than restaurants in the Keys) you NEED to stop at Keys Fisheries on the way down. They have really great variety of local fresh caught seafood (I would go for the hog fish & yellow tail) and their Key Lime Pies are some of the best in the keys, period - the pie alone is worth the stop. For any other Brethren reading along they also specialize in shipping frozen pies, just go to their web site. They really are that good, we were fishing there a month ago and I brought home a dozen!

One of our favorite restaurants is Lazy Days at the extreme SW end of Islamorada, probably only 20 minutes away from Key Colony.

If you are passing through an need a quick bite to eat, either the Lorelei (this is a neat spot where fishing guides and their clients congregate starting about 4:00 PM) or the Islamorada Fish Company (this is in the BassPro World Wide Sportsman store & marina, really quite good.

A lot of folks like Whale Harbor - I don't because it is a $30 seafood buffet and it just ain't right to do that to fresh seafood but right next door at the charter boat marina they have a fresh cook restaurant & bar called Wahoo's with really good sandwiches & burgers

Just down the road from Key Colony you can find snorkel & dive charters specializing in trips to Looe Key reef, probably the best the keys has to offer if you like that kind of thing.

I have not been to Key West for about 6 years, but I'll try to take a look and see if any of my old favorites are still open - restaurant turnover in the Keys is worse than a college town.

Right next to where the Marathon Lady is docked, there is a nice little fish market that sells everything you can think of from the ocean.
