I will be making more frequent trips to SA in the future and whated to get peoples advise for eaterys. I PMed ggeilman, zilla and jorge but then thought others may have some good places to try.

I am open to all restaurants so let me know your favorites. Of course BBQ is usually top on my list.

Add Los Palapas to the list in my PM. It's a cross between fast food and diner food for Tex-Mex, but very reasonably priced and good from my experience. Try the flautas. Locations all over the city and the have a drive thru if you are pressed for time.

If you want real restaurant food, try Mi Tierra's downtown. Or Piedras Negras on the east side of downtown.
But definitely go for the hole-in-the-wall places too! Places like Asadero's and others. There will be some areas you might want to consider missing, but you'll know before you get out of your car. ;)

S.A. = GREAT FOOD

Forgot to suggest a burger/tex-mex combo... Chris Madrid's www.chrismadrids.com, or Tycoon Flats on N. St. Marys (order the Tycoon Burger with extra mushrooms).

River Walk has a slew of excellent places to eat. Very crowded, so you need to get there early. Nice way to spend an evening also.

Hey Stan I guess the best thing to do is find out what part of the city you're going to be in most of the time. It wouldn't make since to give you great places on the westside of the city if you'll be on the NorthEast side most of the time. It used to be traffic wasn't an issue but that's no longer the case.

Shilos is ok, Old World German Restaurant at 410 and Babcock is much better. La Fogottia (sp?) on St Marys for Italian. For burgers Texas Hamburger Company on Huebner. Steak, mostly chains here, Salt Grass is decent. Most of the q here is fair at best, Bill Millers has decent fried chicken, but skip their bbq.

Below is what I sent Stan via PM. You other farkers weigh in with you opinions to balance out my opinions.

Steak: Pricey but I never got a bad steak at Little Rhein Steakhouse on the river. I avoid the tourist trap places like the plague but I always got good food and service there, but I paid for it.

Tex-Mex: I could write a book. Zilla might have an opinion on Felix's in Universal City. I like it, the food is a little salty sometimes but decent food, and reasonable prices. I avoid his brother's place, Leon's, like the plague. When I got a cheese chalupa with a square piece of cheese food melted on a fried tortilla that ruined it for me. You are familiar with Chuy's, there is a location at 281 and 1604. La Fonda on Main, has good food with some healthier alternatives. Henry's Puffy Tacos, address escapes me but it's on the west side of town (on Bandera I think). La Margarita and Mi Tierra downtown, and less than a block apart. Both are owned by the same family. Somewhat touristy but good food and somplace you need to go at least once for the experience. I'll add more as they come to mind.

Mexican: Unless Mario's is open I can't do much to help you. I'm not a huge fan of interior Mexican food. I've got one other place at the back of my mind but can't spit it out right now.

Italian: Napoli's, and again check with Zilla since it's in his neighborhood, in Universal City. Check out Paesano's. I know they have a location on the river, and used to have one just north of downtown on Main street. Order the Shrimp Paesano, their signature dish. There may be one other place I'd add to the list but I need to make sure they are still in the business. A death in the family a couple of years ago hit the family hard and most of the restaurants they owned closed. I'll get back to you on that.

Edited to add: Janitzio's at Walzem Rd. and Austin Hwy. Very good Tex-Mex.

Tex-Mex: I could write a book. Zilla might have an opinion on Felix's in Universal City. I like it, the food is a little salty sometimes but decent food, and reasonable prices. I like the food there but the smokers kill me so I don't eat there anymore.

I avoid his brother's place, Leon's, like the plague. When I got a cheese chalupa with a square piece of cheese food melted on a fried tortilla that ruined it for me. Totally Agree, 100%

La Fonda on Main, has good food with some healthier alternatives. I like this too

La Margarita and Mi Tierra downtown, OK for a night out.

Italian: Napoli's, and again check with Zilla since it's in his neighborhood, in Universal City. This place is very good and a good bargan. My son worked there for a while. The owner is EX Navy and a nice guy.

Check out Paesano's. Been here twice. Once on the river, once to the Basse rd. location. I'm not a fan of this place, it's more of a place to be seen. Foods OK and high priced

Edited to add: Janitzio's at Walzem Rd. and Austin Hwy. Very good Tex-Mex. I eat here a few time a year. Never disappointed in it.

The Italian place I was checking on is gone. The family has opened a new place that apparently serves Q. I've never been there but have enjoyed the other places they've had over the years. It might be worth a shot.

Panchos! Loved that place as a kid. Green chile stew and rice.

Then I grew up.

Their sopapillas were first rate though. And, they had the best idea for table service. Need something, raise the flag. I always liked that and wonder why more places dont do something similar.
