Ok. Here is my question . What is better high payouts in each category, money in the top 5 over all or money in the the top ten of each category? I would love to see money in first place only in each category and then money in the top 5 or ten overall.

It depends on how big the contest is but in general I like payouts for the top 3 to 10 in each category and then GC, RGC and maybe a third place overal as well. Gives more people a chance to at least get some of the entry fee back. Keith

gc and rgc too high, money top 5 each category, perhaps ribbons or medals top 6-10

start paying overall top 5

i realize its a money pit hobby, but being in the top overall is what the object is, that is where the money should be.

paying top 10 in categories is awesome, but 3rd overall usually pays nothing??

that said we still wouldn't get paid, but nice to see the top performers spread it out a bit.

Oh yea, I forgot, this payout structure would cause me to skip this event, nothing worse than getting a 2nd or 3rd and nothing to offset the cost of the meat....

1 bad category and you donated, this will still attract the top 10 teams, but the new teams hoping to hit 1 category or the teams trying to be in the top 10, well, we wouldn't bother with this one.

Lots of people consider getting one top ten call a win. I like cash when I "win".

I've competed in several "professional sports". Never really hated losing until BBQ. The cash helps ease the pain for me.

We at Treasure Island (MN) are paying out ten places in all categories and if you get a call, you are getting a minimum of $200 in the four meats, so you are getting something to help pay for the meats and you get the minimum of your entry fee back...in the "extra" events.
We are trying to spread out the money. Also giving $500 to the mid range team (if we have 50 teams, the overall 25th team would win $500) so you don't have to be in the top ten to possibly take home a good check.

I would say the biggest thing keeping from this one is that it is Father's Day weekend. Otherwise I would probably make the trip. The payout structure is nice especially for teams that can average a call or two per comp.

If it were up to me, I'd perfer to go to contests which paid just top 10 overall. Paying top 10 in each catagory just awards a cook in that catagory. Paying top 10, pays a cook for consistency and being good at all catagories that weekend.

Then you could get two 180 pins and $0 at the same contest. All it would take is one second, one toothpick, or one shred of aluminum foil.

Agree to disagree?

I've been 3rd and 4th overall at contests and never got a dime either.

yes, so I agree to disagree.

That was kind of what I figured. I think each person's personal experiences will flavor how they see the question. High in the categories means you cooked something well. High overall means you cooked nothing bad. What should be rewarded? It's just going to be personal preference.

Personally, I want to play and will be there either way. :) Hope to see you there.

Well, how about this.. pay top 3 in each catagory and top 5 overall? Got to be damn good either way to get any money.

KCBS requires payout for top 5 in categories and top 2 overall. You can do more, but this is the required minimum.

Going by the minimum, I'd say top 5 in category and top five overall seems perfect. Most anybody sees a top five in any kind of contest an achievement(unless there's 5 competing!) so rewarding to that place seems right to me.
