For those of you that compete in KCBS. Do most of you still put garnish in the box, although the rules state it is optional? Why do it one way or the other?

yup, usually get crushed if you don't.

If you do it right it gives the meat a nice presentation.

Garnish always.

Use the Google search down near the bottom of the page and search for turn-in box or something similar and you see a lot of examples, good and bad. Sometimes folks do well without garnish, particularly in pork where you can fill the box with meat much easier, but most of the time when someone tries it it bombs.

Also, check out bbqcritic.com. They have a TON of pics of turn in boxes with actual judges providing presentation scores.

As a judge I recommend it. No, I don't judge garnish - which can take some doing when it's "ugly" - but when there's no garnish and the meat has spent a few minutes sliding all around the box and ended up in a pile on one edge I do take off points for appearance.

If you want the best chance to win in today's KCBS events you really have to garnish. You can do it with greens or with lots of meat, but frankly greens are usually easier.

Right or Wrong, garnish is central to KCBS culture.

Just the way it is.
