I have a co-worker going to Lockhart with time only for one place. Which one should he go to? Smitty's, Blacks or Kruez?

Smitty's for the overall experience.

Blacks is my favorite, so that is where I would go. Get the giant beef rib. It is not to be missed. Awesome.

I wish I could say, but I haven't made the trip there yet.

Get Brisket and Sausage take out from all 3. Then go to a park and feast. Report back on your favorite and why.

+1 for Smitty's.

Go to Kreuz if you prefer that soulless warehouse bbq experience.

Blacks if you want to meet friendly people and possibly even tour the cooking area. Smitty's if you want see their incredible pit up close. If I could only go back to one place, it would be Smitty's because of the pit.

Smitty's pits are something to behold. The way they take the temp of the pit is by holding their hand over the meat.

Remember, Black's is open on Sunday's.

Who the fark goes to Lockhart with time for 1 place??? lol

What Bubba said.

Go to Kreuz and get the fatty beef with a side of hot potato salad

Then over to black for some links, make sure you get the Shiner Bock sausage.

Then over to Smitty's for the beef ribs, and Hit the Chisolm Trail on your way south for some spares.
Stop in Luling for some pecan wood and peanuts.
By time you get to the Bucc-ees station at I-10, you will be ready to drop deuce.

I won't vote because its pointless. My opinion is the one that matters. Each one of these places can have a bad day. In my opinion each makes similar bbq enough to really be considered in line with the town's style. Anyone who visits all three.... well.... its silly really... because its a snapshot of how they did that day. And that really can be a snapshot of how they did yesterday because if you do not like what you had that day its probably because you are eating yesterday's leftovers. Those who know what these places do will understand that comment.

So.. where should you go? Smittys. The true first of firsts who incidentally serve basically the same **** the same way and the other two... sans Blacks sauce. If I had to chose would I go there? No. I know and worked for Ray Perez long ago so I would go to Kreuz to see him. But you, you should go to Smittys.

I hope this helps and you ignore what others say because I know my ****. Unless of course they agree with me... then its okay to do what they say.

watch the Q suck that day. LOL You HAVE to meet John, though.

I have placed "thanks" along the correct people's comments. Some of them, presumably my friends, I ignored as they are either wrong or missed the point. I love them though

Don't forget some time in Luling and some more to spend in Shiner at the brewery.

Best beef ribs I've ever had at Blacks a couple of days ago...

Is that Chisholm Trail?

Is that Chisholm Trail?

Yes. Floyd Wilhelm opened the joint.

I tried to do the tour but was shut out of Smitty's since they closed at 6:00, so I can't comment on them except that they should stay open a little later if they want to serve dinner. Who closes at 6?

Part of my problem is that I was so pumped up that I felt a little disappointed outside of a couple things...

Blacks- Typical dive atmosphere, super friendly employees, food was just okay in my opinion. I wanted to get a sample of most items so I had sausage (original), brisket, and pork ribs. Sausage was pretty course and I'm more of a pork sausage eater so it didn't work well for me. Brisket (point) was cut with the grain so it was stringy and hard to chew, the pork ribs tasted very bitter as it was in the smoke far too long and very dry. My friend ordered the beef rib and about fell off his chair was so good. He still talks about that big fat beef rib and it did look good. If I go back I know that's the only thing I'm going to order.

Kreuz- I loved the big open warehouse with monster pits in the back. I really liked the experience of looking at the wood fire rolling next to me feeding a pit while I ordered. I ordered the beef shoulder and it was pretty good but nothing to die for.

Food quality was better for me at Kreuz but I made the mistake of not getting the beef rib at Black's. I don't know if I will go out of my way to make it back to any of these places as I prefer Salt Lick if I'm going to the Austin area. On a bigger scale my preference is more geared toward KC or Carolina BBQ so to me Texas BBQ is just okay and has it's place but not what I love to eat.
