We are headed over to Kauai in a couple weeks and I was wondering if any other brethren might want to hook up for some cold beers and bbq discussion. Is keale still around? Anyone else happen to be going over at the same time? Was thinking of bringing along a care package or two. Have to bring some rubs along anyway since the spouses family is expect me to cook while I am over there. Suggestions on places to sample. Have not been there in about six years.

Kapaa....Chicken in a Barrel. Right hand side of the road. Just order the chicken. Trust me. You can google them for their website.

If you can't make it to Kapaa, they have a satellite drum in the Home Depot parking lot.

Thanks SJ. Was also thinking of trying Scotty's and also Harley's in the coconut marketplace if they are still around. There was a guy with a place called something like pecos bbq the last time we were there six plus years ago but I think they folded. Anyone else going to be in town?

Is Pono Market still really good for fresh poke these days? Other recommendations? Yes this transplanted Texan like poke and sushi too! Yumm!

Don't tell anyone except the brethren, but the best place for sushi is Foodland (south of Safeway IIRC).

Mrs. SJ made it a mission to sample poke from Princeville down to Poipu. She ate it every day we were there (21 days between 2010 and 2012).

But you must get there early, because some flavors run out fast.

Don't know if the bbq place is still in the coconut grove shopping center, I smelled no smoke when I was there.

Also, Scotty's BBQ (In Kapaa) is supposed to be good, but as they roll the sidewalks up at 8:30PM, I wasn't able to sample it.

Stopped by chicken in a barrel today. The chicken and ribs were outstanding as predicted. Have some additional pit pictures. Three UDS smokers making magic out back of the place. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/04/y3yqeta3.jpg

Some more photos. Shannon did a great job of taking our order and is cute as a button. Kiopoa? Was the main guy doing the cooking and let me tell you he knows what he is doing. Enjoyed meeting everyone there! Will have to try the other location down in Kapaa this week too. Also going to try Scotty's BBQ place in Kapaa which is just down the road from the second Chicken in a Barrel location.

Stopped at puka dog today since it was on Anthony Bourdain's show and the spouse wanted to try it. Should be named puke a dog. 6.75 for a lot of bread and a not so great hotdog. KCBS Score- Taste, Tenderness, Presentation. 6,4,7.

Time for a quick update. After wanting to tour the Coco Palms Hotle for years, we stumbled onto a tour with Bob Jasper, who used to run all the Hollywood Movie Tours on Kauai. He has more great stories about all the movies that have been filmed over here. So what's all this got to do with BBQ? Well the CCPH had a killer pit back in the day right outside the main lobby and dining areas Bob is shown here standing next to it. It looks like it would hold four good sized while hogs or six goats if needed. Imagine the smells this thing made!!! If you get over here you have to look up Bob and take his tour. Elvis himself stayed here of course and apparently was a huge BBQ fan. 76752

Another quick update: We were passing through Kapaa on the way back from the Coco Palms tour, and snagged some seriously good fish tacos and bbqed taquitos. It's just north of the old Scotty's BBQ location (unfortunately now closed) and the Kapaa chicken in a barrel location. Look for their trailer right on the north end of town on the ocean side. Man was that fresh and good!!!!

Stopped by Da Booze Shop in Waimea today. They feature classic plate lunches and BBQ. Grabbed a pork sandwich with classic Mac salad. Be sure to say hi to Kulia when you drop in. She was wonderful and very friendly!

They are using a small CookShack for their bbq. It was a little tough but very tasty and had a nice kick to the sauce. They are really known for their plate lunch but we would rank them as 8,6,7.

So now that you have had some BBQ in Waimea, you are needing something to cleanse your pallet. Next stop is JoJo's shaved ice. Now there are two in town but we have been stopping at the one on the left as you hear out of town towards Waimea cannon. It's a pretty broken down looking building but has awesome Hawaiian shaved ice. We recommend the #4 which comes with a scoop of macadamia ice cream in the bottom and then shaved ice over the top and the coated with coconut crew and coconut syrup. It will do the job.

Somewhat colorful inside but very good. We all have been in older bbq places and know all this is just "character" that adds to the experience.

Tonight's dinner is served by T3 at the rental. We start off with some great poke and sushi from the local grocery store. Folks trust me. The lady who runs the sushi counter at Foodland, in Kapaa knows what she is doing. Sorry no pics of the poke and sushi. The spouse and her sister descended on it. Barely got some before it was gone.

Next up we prepped some pork loin early this morning with peppers, onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms in a baggy. Over that I mixed up a fresh ginger, garlic, herb, oil, and a couple other add ins marinade and popped them all in ziplock baggies for the day in the fridge. Off we went to Waemai canyon for the day. At 5pm they got slid on to bamboo sticks and tossed on the grill with some more asparagus rolled in condensed butter, garlic, and some red pepper flakes.

For some strange reason, cooking here vs. MN seems easier, more relaxed somehow. I can't quite put my finger on it yet.

Thanks. It will be hard to come home. But the costs over here are killer. Have not seen too may tank style pits either. Hard to come by. Lots of open earth, cinderblock, and Santa Marie style pits though.

Tonight's dinner is from the KSR, or Kalaheo Steak and Ribs in Kalaheo, Kauai. I recommend a Kona Longboard, and the combo with Prime Rib, Ribs, and baked potato. Tell Ernie (one of the owners) that Paul and Julie from Triple T BBQ sent ya! Dee is an outstanding server!!

So tonight is out last night on the island and I have to apologize to my brethren. There was one more place we had heard about but just didn't have the energy to drive all the way back around to the far side of the island again. Besides, we are in Hawaii and this ol' boy needed some sushi! Stopped by Bushido Sushi in Kapa'a. Outstanding!! You have to stop in here if you like Sushi and are in Kauai. Great stuff!

Have some time today before we fly out so we are squeezing in a couple more places. In Kapa'a there is a little local tex mex place with great pulled pork and or beef stacked enchiladas. Check out Verde's. J had the smoked chicken tacos and they were good too although I would say the guys at chicken in a barrel have the best chicken on the island right now.

So the last meal, sounds ominous doesn't it, is at the Lihue Barbacue Inn in Lihue, Kauai. Now if you are looking for high dollar, white table cloth dining, this is not the place. This is a local joint that the islanders all dine at. Think classic bbq or diner in Texas that has been open for 50 plus years. They serve classic local food. The diner plate special is composed of fried chicken, marinaded in butter milk, with a classic breading, deep fried shrimp, and pork ribs. Just what your cardiologist ordered right? Also comes with the standard choice of green salad, rice and Mac salad. Got the Mac salad just to try and blend in. Not that the bbq shirt from a Texas establishment and weird blend of a southern drawl with a MN accent is a dead giveaway either. ;)

So the meal starts with a saimin soup or miso soup. Look it up but the saimin is good tonight.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/15/aje7ujuj.jpg

The ribs are really just honey glazed ringlets. Not too shabby, but very sweet and with no heat. The shrimp are tasty and done with a tempura batter, so even though they are dark in color, they are lite in taste.

Overall I would stay with the tempura shrimp and the kabobs that my wife had instead of the dinner plate. No vote of Ono on this one.

So in short, as of 3-14-13, chicken in a barrel is the closest thing to good bbq on the island right now we could find. Given that I am headed back to 12 inches of snow and a layer of freezing rain in MN the idea of moving here and hanging out a shingle has crossed our minds. It's if the locals and tourists would support it or not. Very expensive over here and very limited sources for good product. Real estate is still out of sight and going up too. But the weather is incredible too. Provided they don't have another hurricane hit the island for the next twenty years. ;).

Hope this helps other brethren who may be traveling to kauai in the near future. Please post up any updates or new openings in this thread too over the coming months.

I cannot show these pics to Mrs. SJ; She loves Kauai and would probably leave me.

I think Puka Dog is trading off its fame (and it's in Poipu). As I understand it, the original owners got divorced, and one ex runs Puka Dog and I forget the location/name of the other ex. You were probably tasting the spice of divorce in your dog.

The other BBQ places looked nice. I hope they are still around when we go next year.

You mentioned Scotty's. Was it still open?

I was right about Foodland, wasn't I?

Nope. Catering only.

It was good. But found a place in kapa'a that was just as good and closer to where we were staying. In laws fell in love with Kauai and want to buy a place over there. I say go for it and we will visit. That flight is getting longer every time we go though.
