Man is this a stout field!

While I am hesitant to make an individual pick from among friends, my money is on one of the teams from the upper midwest.

Consider- just from the Iowa teams I know :
The father and son duo of Grills Gone Wild of Iowa and Pig Skin BBQ ( #2 in points)
Big Tz # 3 in points with a #1 in brisket
Lucky's Q - #4 at the Royal Invitational last year
Iowa's Smoky D's - always a threat.

While skill got all these teams to the final - with this tough a field - luck will sure be a factor.

No matter who wins - it will be a stellar accomplishment worthy of praise from all of us.

I am just proud of the quantity and quality of the teams from our part of the country.

The problem with bbqrace.com is that it just looks at KCBS contests. Myself and most from my area only cook a handful at most KCBS contests. Most of ours are FBA. nationalbbqrankings.com combines multiple sanctioning bodies giving a more accurate representation IMO. Now if we could only get it updated.

I was thinking the same thing. I was just looking at the Everglades Seasoning Team on bbqrace. I hate to be the one to out him, but I find it hard to believe Jimmy is ranked 715.

I'm thinking he's only cooked a couple KCBS contests this year, one of them being the 73 team Lakeland Pig Fest that he GC'd.

Being the KCBS guy I am I naturally am more interested in those standings rather than other sanctioning bodies so it tickled me to see bbqrace.com get onboard. Previous sites finally could not keep up with the painstaking work of updating standings on a regular basis so they were unreliable. Hopefully these guys make a few coins to warrant their efforts with this site. PLUS...where does a site stop adding rankings? Should SCBA be included as well...or SBN????

I'll jump on out there and make a prediction.....

The GC will come out of the following:

Little Pig Town
The Smoking Hills
Buffalo's BBQ
Caveman Cuisine
Truebud

HOWEVER...do not count us or Two Old Men and a Grill out either....Bob has been on a roll this year and it will be interesting to see how the Midwest judges score things.

ahhhh.... that's much better....I sure didn't want to see any teams slammed on this thread!

All I AM sure of is.....if I go running in there with my Western North Carolina BBQ sauces.....the judges will make sure the five I listed will win....or others.

Looking at the rankings again and sorting according to National BBQ Rankings, the list changes some.

One thing I am positive of is that the judges at this upcoming cook will be accustomed to Midwest flavor profiles which automatically puts southern and northern teams to a huge disadvantage unless a team has a universally loved sauce or can adapt.

Thanks to Dawgphan for pointing out a huge error I made on an earlier post of this.

I think that you are probably just looking at the top 200. If you scroll to the bottom of the rankings page, you can display all the teams and it will show everyone. I am sure a lot of those teams are ranked.

anyway, thanks for doing that. I am sure it was a lot of work, and really interesting.

I wonder what the average difference is and who has the biggest difference. I am guessing Swamp Boys or a team like that.

I wish my team was as good as BBQ Race has me but they have contests that are not mine listed for me from some team from the SE. Then the National BBQ Rankings don't show all the contests I have done including my 1st GC last month. Don't get me wrong I like both the websites and it must be a nightmare to keep up but wow that is off quite a bit!

Send us an email and let us know what is wrong. The biggest problem is that so many teams have so many variations of how their names are spelled that we are having to clean up a lot of this mess. This may have caused us to merge to teams together that shouldn't have been merged.

See everyone in Bentonville this weekend.

Has anyone ever thought of assigning a team a Team Number for purposes of registration and competing? The team could still use their name at the event but scoring would be posted and tracked by Team Number.

Holy Smokes - I still have to work tomorrow (til probably about 4 pm) before leaving Kansas City

Yeah it is hard to believe I am at work right now in Lexington, MA and tomorrow at this time I'll be sitting in a cooks meeting.

Be safe everyone as you drive in today.

Lookin' forward to cookin'!

So how productive are you guys today?

I have friends that came out of just about every Regional so I can't base my picks on geography........I'll commit by lunch tomorrow, let you all know who the top 5 will be :becky:

Good Smokin Luck to everyone there! Don't do too much per contest socializing

ZBQ has been on a roll, but we are set up next to them ...I plan on introducing them to my favorite drink the "Big Jack" ...equal parts Jack Daniels, vanilla vodka and a splash of Coke...when you finally realize your tipsy, it's way too late...evil laugh mod:shock:

Put the Royal Invitational + Open together with Sam's and the consistency of the upper midwest in general and Iowa in particular is apparent.

Add in team of the year standings and the conclusion is clear. Right now the center

of the BBQ universe is right here in the upper midwest.

Those of us who organize contests up here are very lucky ( as in Lucky's Q) to play host to these great teams.

interesting slant.

so you're suggesting more judges travel from the upper midwest than the south east and west, AND that their numbers are so great as to influence national championships via predisposition of great BBQ over 100's of teams from mulitple regions?

I ABSOLUTELY believe that the large majority of the teams in the top 10 compete regularly in that area...and.."that area" is defined as the midwest whether it be the 'northern midwest or what have you'... had a distinct advantage. Obviously none of us know where the 50 judges came from but being the gambling person I am, I would bet good money very few came from the new england area, the southeast or southwest.....OR northeast. Note I am NOT saying NONE came from those regions, but I am confident the majority came from a 200 mile radius of Bentonville....hence the advantage to midwest teams.

As for our poor showing....we deserved the 39th place we got so... "the kid" here is not belly aching or calling it lousy judging. I am sure the judges did the best they could but they do have regional preferences. That is why our "sport" is damn near gambling....because we cannot control what judges like....there is nothing quantitative and there is little we can do but cook our best and hope for the right tables. We did not cook our best.

Anyone that would argue that the outcome of this contest would have been the same if the contest were held in Rhode Island, or South Carolina or Arizona or Washington State would have to be totally eaten up with ignorance. Judges are heavily influenced by their preference in flavor profiles and regional differences definitely come into play. If you don't believe me...take any team you wish and let them compete for two years in another region and see how they do compared to their home territory. Very, very, very few teams score well all over the country....in fact....I cannot think of one team i would put my money on if they competed nationwide regularly....and nationwide is not defined as IL, MO, IA, AR or OK. On the other hand, I am not trying to take away from the success of the teams this weekend..... but to believe that all teams had the same level playing field in terms of judging preference is again...well...like a Carolina Panthers...they will be hyped up about "THEIR" team than looking at stats.

They were searching for judges.....and all Master judges were eligible for participating in this event. An extremely few will make the LONG ASS drive or pay airfare to go judge this cook-off and I do not blame them. SO, this event was loaded with judges from a close radius.

Twist this or turn it anyway you wish if for any reason other than being argumentative....again...bring that contest to another region of the country and let's see how the results differ. The same applies to the Royal and other "National Championships".

Enough said from here.....it is like pounding one's chest and declaring the best of all times. It will always be subjective.

A midwest boy here, and I've cooked against these teams, and have drank with a few of them also. All great cooks in their own right and deserve their spot in the light. Some, two in particular, travel all around the country and cook. They are consistent and score well. I understand the point about this hobby as being a crap shoot at the judging table but we can't discredit consistent winners. For the most part if you are consistently in or close to the top ten, (not me  yet), then you are a good cooking team. I had a chance to meet a judge from California at a rib contest this summer and we spoke about this subject. i asked about regionality and his comment was; all judges first looked for correctly cooked meat, (tenderness) that tastes like the product it is suppose to be. Pork tastes like pork and Brisket like brisket, and then worry about the flavor profile, hopefully you get the point.

Great job midwest teams!!! Way to represent!!!

Our chicken did better in Bentonville :becky:

Actually, our 681 would have been a GC in every contest we cooked in this year, except for Fryeburg, ME. These were the top 50 out of the around 750 teams that entered the Sam's Club series. It was a damn difficult field to compete against, but we had a great time and will try it again next year.

You guys did great! Especially with the Sizzling cook-off so congrats!

We had a great time as well and enjoyed cooking with such a good field of competitors. As for our chicken, of all times in the past TWO years....we did not have bite through skin and why it had to be THIS contest is beyond me. Still scratching our heads over that one. Perhaps the Smart Chicken has run its course......

As for ribs....they were a joke and the only 2 surprises there was they were not DAL and that Trigg was next to last....
