OK. So what I learned this weekend is that I need to work on my chicken and brisket. Below is my chicken box from this weekend. What do you guys think? The thighs are too big? I am fairly happy with my scores but always looking to improve.

Look pretty dang good to me! I can't imagine ur scores were too low.... I like a full box like that.
A few vary in size but I don't sweat that to much. A judge has to have some serious OCD and spends a ton of time in his moms basement if that bothers him that much...
Nothing wrong with big chicken, but from the photo it looks like the sauce is fairly heavy.

Looks great but I personally would like to see more color on the meat. 8 leaning towards 9.

What were the scores like? Where you hit more on tenderness or taste? Appearance doesn't look that bad to me, but then again I am not a CBJ...just a cook.

i'd say prolly 9. but looking at the photo for longer than one would be able at the table, i don't see any seasoning under the sauce.

What scores did they hit you on appearance for? To me it looks like a 8/9...
I LOVE full boxes, I think most judges do. The pieces look the same size and shape, I want to reach in and grab one.
Is the top of the box messy? Container dinged up or grungy??

Sauce looks a little too thick. The full box, and they way the pieces are sitting up up high looks great!
8 for me; again sauce a little too thick.

A solid 8, maybe a 9 in person.

Thanks everyone. You are scoring consistent with the judges from the event. I think I got one 9 and the rest were 8s (don't have the score sheet in front of me now). I think I need to thin out the sauce a touch going forward. I tend to use thicker sauces which I am learning is not as well received as a thin glaze.

heavy sauce, uneven size. Good looking box though!

Your box would get an 8 from me on appearance. If all of the pieces where trimmed to the same size it would get a 9.

I've always approached the appearance score from the pov of "does it look like something I really look forward to taking a bite of". "Does it make my mouth water". "I can't wait to sink my teeth into it". Etc.
Moist is a desirable thing. Gloppy is not. It makes me think you're hiding something, although in this case the sauce is so thin I can see it's hiding nothing - in fact, revealing a lack of color and foretelling no hope of bite thru on the skin.
Looks like a 7 to me. Sorry if that's harsh.

Dev, I appreciate your thoughts. For what its worth, I know for a fact that the skin was bite through. I wouldn't even consider doing a competition if I couldn't turn in bite through skin.
