I saw quite a few familiar faces. In fact I remember when you did that Paul Kirk interview at Go Naked. Too bad you didn't get video (or better yet audio of me yelling) as my trailer rolled downhill that morning. Something about the need to move us four feet, a forklift and not putting the chocks back behind the wheels......

Glad you like it. Since the latest seasons of a tv show on bbq that will not be named has turned into a generic beauty pageant/game show, we are excited to show the true spirit of what its like to compete and get some competitors faces out there. The cameras we have are a panasonic hpx-170, canon 5d and canon c300. Absolutely love the close ups of the food and I can't go an hour editing the footage without having to eat something, honestly. We'll keep you posted. I think we'll be in Harrisburg, PA next. Wish we could travel the country and showcase all parts but it's not in the budget this year. We'll Keep at it and see ya on the road.

The cameras we have are a panasonic hpx-170, canon 5d and canon c300.

I can see the 5D being a decent B cam for the C300 but that 170 has to be a pain to intercut with the other two. Very different look.

Hey guys... trailer looks great! Are you guys from around Bethlehem PA? I think we met at the Salisbury comp this year... saw some footage from that event in the trailer... (Christmas City)

Great to hear you are coming over to the Harrisburg Keystone Classic event! I am on the planning commitee as is Mr. Gnome above. Let us know how we can help or if you need anything while shooting.... We will be having our Friday night ancillary catagories again this year... as well as the 4 meat KCBS event on Saturday.

Update I received via email:

First off, I can't edit this footage longer than 30 minutes without having to eat something. Jesus. Matt Hamm really pulled off some great food porn shots on this one, Im very close to buying a meat slicer and keeping it in my office for projects like this.
Just sending an update out on the progress.
Everything is looking great, the content is awesome and the soundtrack is kickass. Really happy with how this looks. Im gonna continue editing as much as possible when I can, but rest assured this documentary is coming together nicely. looks great, sounds great, and between the smoking gnome stealing a golfcart, paul kirks legendary greatness, and tom bera getting bananas shoved in his face, I think we've got something really unique here. It's gonna be a bit longer though because we want this thing to be the best, so we've got 2 more sections to shoot (a local butchers schooling on meats and a super slomo intro shot with a bunch of competitors). But like an 18hour smoked brisket, the payoff will be worth it.
I'd also love any original music for the soundtrack so if you have any or know any decent bands send some my way.
and don't worry, t-shirts and stickers are on the way for all of you that donated. Thanks again. keep checking us out at www.DirtProductions.com (http://www.dirtproductions.com/).

I know this isn't going to sit well with many, but I wouldn't produce something full of foul language. Yeah, I've been known to have to go wash my mouth out with soap, but I ain't running around trying to start a new TV show with that language, either.

The most popular show on TV right now has NO cuss words or bleeps in it.

The most popular show on TV right now has NO cuss words or bleeps in it.

But as a documentary you have to show how it really is out there, and to not show how the people involved in comp bbq really are would be a disservice to the people who it is about and to those who don't know what it's about and are learning about it for the first time.

Also a network TV show can't have foul language or cuss words, because than sponsors wouldn't pay for ads and the network would not make any money. But network TV shows have plenty of sex and violence. In the last 5 to years cable TV shows have become extremely popular, starting with the Sopranos and then Mad Men and others like Dexter and Justified. All of those shows post great numbers and they are full of cuss words and nudity.

Just saying is all.

Much appreciated everybody. I am very glad that you guys are liking what we are making here. Truly. This doc is for us competitors. It shows our world, has unbelievable insight from all levels of competitors, and has a great soundtrack. Our goal with this is to give the public a glimpse into the REAL world of competition bbq, what its like to compete, how much time/energy/money it takes, and best of all, the camaraderie. Plus, how some past competitors have turned bbq into a business.

We are still in the editing phase (have over 15 hours of unbelievable footage) but I am always accepting original music and sponsorship. just contact me through our website.

Thank you all very much for your support. I hope we do you all proud and once its done I can finally get back to competing. Cheers everybody. I'll keep you all posted.

In smoke we trust.

I am sorry to hear that competition BBQ offends you. really! but why would you belittle a form of bbq that defines "the competitors" , have you competed? just wondering, or is this another way for you to promote your own agenda.. a video about competition is about competition correct, not your back yard cooker? or have you lost intrest in "wowing" others in another in a more comfortable venue

Wow, you are quite a supercilious little gnome, aren't you? Joke.

I suppose you think in another thread where I commented that a certain person's excellent rib picture was too mahogany in appearance and "lacked the gray uniformity of a boil rib" would be meant to be taken literally. Do you think that was an insult? Or in other threads are you the type that thinks that I really intend to freeze Adam Perry Lang in liquid Nitrogen. Your type bring howls of derisive laughter.

Of course I do say these type of things because people like you give me a lot of amusement.

Now, am I offended? Do I really want to belittle the competitors or even the guy that made this film? No! Duh. Why else would I later comment in this thread that the film footage looked as good as another bbq documentary, "Smokestack Lightning" if you even know such a thing ever existed? If you are intellectually deficient I will explain; that is a compliment.

Second... I guess you didn't see the actual film the OP posted. Right from the start one of the featured players talks about what a peculiar breed we are. We are driven to create and push the envelope. So... in jest, I mention that I am offended by that classification and then offer evidence that I myself am that "warped." That's called comedic irony. Each segment of course lays a comedic element to the faults of our "breed."

As far as competition... I was competing before you sure as hell even started. To some distinction in Texas I might add. And really, I am sure the last time anyone ever referred to me, who raised more than 108K in charitable donations due to my Minnie Howell Good Vittles Society in the last three years, as a "backyard anything" was maybe 1988. In fact, in order to LAND the job assisting Ray Perez at the old Kruez that's exactly how I referred to myself.

Simply put, after a few awards and walks in one of the oldest BBQ Pageants in the nation, once you do the math as a winner, one realizes that they might do more good giving back to families in need than continuing to try and prove themselves. I have a true and proven method of cooking, one that some actually follow... so that assuredly makes me more than a backyard cooker. LOL

Furthermore, heck... you mentioning of the subject smacks that you disrespect the backyard cooker. Ah how the ignorant underestimate the novice. Let me know when you get to stage 4 of the "competitor" cycle, if you ever do. So few make it. Your stuck on number 2.

Now go back into one of your tribal huddles with your anti-funk lackeys and toss a few PM back and forth to figure out what you want to say next.

To the original poster... if I have to explain... it looks like your film will be doing much to show the world what little freaks we are, and we are. But remember Arnold in Pumping Iron when responding to people that said Bodybuilding was "strange" and "didn't make sense." He responded, "and racing around a race track in a speeding car does?"

Just wanted to let any competitors know that we will be filming this year at Green Lane, PA "Smoke in the valley" bbq competition. This is a great event and any competition team that would like to be in the documentary we'd love to have you. The shot is going to be a super slowmo epic shot of a group of competitors running full blast with turnin containers. These will be the title shots to the doc and the only "cinematic" shot we're getting but we will most likely be filming early on Saturday morning. Should be some good stuff. So hope to see you out there. Oh and if all goes well, "American Smoke" will be available for purchase August 2013. We're very proud of this and I must say there is absolutely nothing else out there like it. hope you all enjoy. Cheers.

We're very proud of this and I must say there is absolutely nothing else out there like it. hope you all enjoy. Cheers.

Last thing you want is me running lol, but I volunteer Sammi, if you want to have her...

Greetings comrades,

American Smoke is badass and Im steps away from having final dvds printed up! Fired up to share it with all of you. I finally finished the final edit and it is currently getting audio mastered, dvd design and final touches put on, really just cleaning it up. Hope you guys and gals like it, Im confident you will. We've spent almost 2 years filming it and It really turned into a great doc, covering all grounds from start to finish what its like to be in competition bbq, the people that surround us, and great tips and information on current trends with cooking meats and turn-ins, starts from the importance of local butchers talking about quality meats and the specific cuts used to some of the guys that are making a good living out of bbq today.*** I promise you will be hungry as hell when it is over.*** Thanks again for the support and we hope it gets some great exposure, we'd love to do another one, if the budget allows, where we can travel the country and showcase all of the other regions and much more people. So thanks again and we're on track to have dvds printed and for sale by the end of august (Im having another kid and buying a first home this month....while chainsmoking and finishing off all my liquor), but it will be available on our website, www.DirtProductions.com by end of August and we're working through wider distribution now as well. So stay tuned and again thanks for allowing us to showcase everything. Cheers and beers!

Will it only be on DVD, or are you marketing it to stream on sites like Amazon or Netflix? We watch everything via stream now, so I was wondering if that'll be an option. Either way we look forward to it. I'll do a brisket and feed friends and family for a showing.

Very much resembles the season 1 BBQ Pitmasters which is what sucked me into competition BBQ. These last few seasons have been crap and we no longer watch. Looking very forward to getting back to the basics of comp BBQ. Love seeing some of the current pitmasters that are out on the circuit.

Howdy Ho,

We're happy as hell to say that Oct 4th DVD's will be available for purchase on our website www.DirtProductions.com. We will also be premiering the film at Harrisburg bbq comp tomorrow night around 9pm (much thanks to Andy Sawran from MABA).

The first prints of these are standard def dvd's and we're going to have bluerays available with bonus features by xmas time. We shot this in High Rez HD so the bluerays are gonna look even better!

Hope everybody likes the flick, we love it, tons of food porn plus great interviews and great teams and we really hope to do another season where we can showcase more teams across the country and more bbq organizations.

In addition, we're having a screening at YARDS brewery in Philly on Thursday Oct. 17th, where we're serving bbq and drinking beers. All proceeds will go towards Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. heres the link:

Thanks again for the support, This took us 2 1/2 years to complete and I hope its well received. Enjoy. In Smoke We Trust.

Howdy ho amigos!

We appreciate the good response were getting from American Smoke. Orders are shipping were happy to say we got our first orders from the netherlands as well!
There is a mistake in the film though and just to be clear, Christmas City bbq team is comprised of Tom and Stacie Feil. It was listed as Marc(his brother). Out apologies. This will be fixed for the bluerays.

Please feel free to let us know your thoughts, hope we did the sport proud.

Were also holding a screening thursday oct. 17, from 7pm-10pm at Yards Brewery in Philly. Proceeds go to Childrens hospital of philly. Come on out for bbq, beer, and the movie. Details here: http://dirtproduction.blogspot.com/2013/10/american-smoke-screening-yards-brewery.html?m=1

Thank you again, hoping this creates some steam to film another one, until then well see you out there!

Thanks again for the great reception the film has been receiving. For those wondering, we are still working on getting Bluerays printed, taking a lot longer in dealing with these companies and getting exactly what we want. But we're gunning for summer to have bluerays available and hopefully some t-shirts as well.
In addition, we'll be out at the cbbqa sponsored santa anita bbq comp 3/22 doing some coverage out there and we've been tossing around ideas for a followup film showcasing more "unique" competitions throughout the country, showing more diverse teams/regions, detailing more in depth techniques and gear, and showcasing the amazing charity events that bbq serves. we'll see how things line up. Anyway, can't wait for this season to get going. Thank you all again for the kickass support and we'll see you out there.

Just now finished watching it for the first time. Well done! Loved the camera work, music, and candidness of the people. You guys put your own spin on showing things from the competitor's side and it was refreshing. Plus I saw a lot of people I know which is always cool. I'd score it a 9.5 on the FBA scale. :thumb:

Now for a great event put on for a great charity, plan on coming down to Smoke on the Water in Winter Haven FL. 80 some teams, on a lake, 5 stages with live bands playing, and all the $$ raised (I think around $100k this year) goes to the local Boy's and Girl's Clubs. And the FBA teams are a really fun bunch! Get with me and I can put you in touch with the right people.
