We are new to competition BBQ and were wondering which contests you guys recommend we enter. We are from Massachusetts and want to do one or two each month in the spring and summer. This year we only did two total , Merrimack,nh and we are registering for Harvard,MA. We have a fifth wheel toy hauler camper so going further distances is fine. Roc City ribfest looks incredible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I always enjoy Lake Placid. Rhode Island was a good venue.

Roc City and Boston Hills are both run by competitors - so they are both well run.

RI was an amazing venue - you just can't beat putting ribs on with hot air balloons going up right next to you. Very cool.

The Battle of the BBQ Brethren is a great event, if you consider Long Island part of the north east.

I second Sledneck's note about problem people, but thankfully they were relegated to doing garnish classes on Saturday night.

Our schedule is on www.teamzbq.com (http://www.teamzbq.com), maybe it will give you a few ideas. Other contests not on our schedule that we would recommend but didn't cook at this year include:

Troy, NY (we judged)
New Paltz, NY (a nice event, would be 6 in a row for us this year so skipped it)
Greenfield, MA (judged last year)

Roc City, beachfront lake Ontario on memorial day
Boston Hills, free beer and pizza ( or at least what they refer to as pizza)
Lake Placid, 4th of July literally on the Olympic speed shaking oval

I'm interested in hearing more about other peoples favorites. Next year I'm going to head out of NY more, going to try and put some new places on the schedule. Lexington and Gettysburg are on my short list. Good choices?

Gettysburg has potential, they just need some fine tuning. Lexington, NC? That contest is awesome. Not sure about Lexington, MA.

Come on out to the Midwest! We'll take care of you and will give you your very own gallon of Mai Tai.
