I am still trying to raise the funds to do this contest. Between birthdays, truck repairs, and yearly trips August is a tough one financially. BUT if I am able to do some juggling I will be there

Isn't this where the NASCAR track is located? If so I would love to see them do an event at the track if possible in the future. That would be sweet!

Balls Casten

Track is at Newton (east of DSM) ... this is Nevada (north of DSM)

But agree, a contest around a NASCAR event would be great.

As of early this week the organizer had ten confirmed, four "check's in the mail", and a fair amount of interest. I can't imagine an Iowa contest not getting 25 teams!

TomB
08-09-2012, 05:59 AM
Wow. Only 10 teams. Is it typical for entries to come later? This is my only contest this year. An emergency surgery kept me from WDM. I am doing a practice cook Sunday with new recipes. Two years ago we had about 30 teams there. Great setting with county fair.

Doug has a point, at some point organizers will have to sit down and do some scheduling and planning. Don't get me wrong, organizers can't worry about every contest but geographically some planning could be done.
My crystal ball says they will end up with exactly 25.

14 as of late last week. We did some heavy recruiting in Winterset yesterday & today. Winterset had 24 teams for a non sanctioned contest.(which I hope gets sanctioned in the future. The venue and organization team was AWESOME!)

Very embarassing if Iowa BBQ teams don't step up and support Iowa contests. Two Iowa contests in one year that won't meet the state championship criteria doesn't look good. The organizers are doing their best, now we need to step up!
Join us in Nevada next weekend!

WOW that was the deciding factor in us not being able to do Nevada is that we were told in contacts(phone and email) as well as entry form, that there would not be power. I wonder why that changed and if we would have known that we would have done Nevada instead of Emmetsburg.

LOL!! Thanks but no thanks BJ. As it is now I got electricity and a bathroom lol. With the wife that is important. Besides I already got 4 pork butts and 3 racks of ribs and some chicken and even have 2 briskies in the freezer in case we had done Nevada. I can honestly say if we would have known what the bathroom situation is(Tracy says never again to a portapotty and well i am too fat for a portapotty and who knows what kind of ban I would get if someone seen my fat a$$ taking a squirt behind my truck) and if we would have known electricity is an option(keep in mind my GMG) we would have done Nevada but we were told no power and at this moment we dont have a generator, and I refuse to buy one that I can afford but can be heard 2 counties over.

I will say there were several reasons I wanted to do Nevada, i think one heading north has been mentioned a few times:grin: but it just didnt work out. I just wish if power was available WE would have been told when WE asked.

If restrooms are good, let me know and I can put this contest on my calender for next year when I wont be relying on power or my GMG.

Sounds like there are a couple teams holding out for the contest to hit 25. I don't get the logic except for the fact I bet one has a Jack auto entry riding on another GC and doesn't want to waste a trip if there won't be 25.
I would rather have 25 teams guaranteed today so maybe an additional 5 would take the leap! I appreciate the teams that have decided to compete no matter what and I look forward to a cool Iowa weekend!

Bottom feeder?......I sure hope your not referring to my good friend John Nilges (Parrothead). He was indeed headed to Omaha to get meat to head to Wisconsin, when he had a blow out on his pit. He lost a Brake light and major damage to the fender of his pit, had to have it fixed in Omaha and knew he wouldn't be in Wisconsin on time. If you are referring to him bottom feeding against Moe, Racoon Flats, Smokehouse 72, Honeybadger and yourself for that matter, then you have some self confidence issues. I sure hope you were joking with your comment.

I have a perspective that knows all the farkers in this discussion and knows what cool people all yall are. I understand where everyone is coming from, but also understand that this is nothing that a discussion over a fire and a couple of beers can't solve. Hopefully we can do that this weekend in Omaha my friends.

pat
08-27-2012, 07:39 AM
Appreciate your thoughts Ryan! This thing has gotten way out of hand. I never said a specific name(s) and then get called out for using the term bottom feeder about John. Was I talking about John?...maybe, but I could of been and was also talking about 3 or 4 other teams that signed up the last few days leading to the contest. Frankly, if someone called me a bottom feeder I would laugh and consider it a compliment. IMO it simply means they are scared to cook against you :thumb:

By the way, Spanky's "boot" that will be on display in Omaha is due to him breaking his foot in Waterloo earlier this season. He can barely walk to check his pit, let alone show how tough he is  Time to move on and let this thread die a respectful death....cause that's what my momma taught me to do. See everyone in Omaha.

matthew burt
08-27-2012, 08:30 AM
Had you responded to my post like this instead of the way that you and Spanky did it would of never got out of hand. John is a very good friend of mine and when you hear a term such as "bottom feeder" being used it tends to offend some people ( just as it would of anyone else who read something similar regarding one of their friends). My whole point from the beginning was without the 2 teams showing up you would of had nothing more than a practice cook!

pat
08-27-2012, 08:38 AM
If I offended John, then let him speak for himself. With all due respect, it isn't any of your business and you weren't even at the contest. You seriously need to chill out dude.

Oh and by the way, we had 2 teams willing to break apart to make the 25 so your buddy ain't no savior.

matthew burt
08-27-2012, 08:50 AM
I made it my business! And according to 1 of the teams you claim were willing to break apart, they actually had no intentions of breaking apart......by the way i guarantee you would of said something had it of been one of your buddys. Also, I thought your mother taught you to let things drop? Have a nice day
