The time of the class has been changed to 5 PM to 9 PM - which does NOT fit with our plans, so the Fragile Flower and I are no longer planning on being there.

Rich, thanks for the info on the KCK class however, I'd prefer to not wait until the 25th of May to get this done. That's the start of the Weekend of the GAB contest at the Woodlands and time off will be an issue for that. Besides, I'd like to judge one or two contests in March and April before Big Creek BBQ gets cranked up for the season.

BTW... more than likely, I'll be in St. Louis early afternoon on Saturday and plan to drive back to KC immediately after the class is over Saturday night. I'm not real thrilled that they made the class an evening class now but I guess I'll make do.

Hey Thanks, Kevin! I hadn't seen that schedule previously!

Ed and Rich, sorry but I'd rather drive 1 hour as opposed to four! Plus, I was going to have a rough time of it in St. Louis that weekend... Have to be at Lake of the Ozarks (central Missouri) all day Friday and 3 hours Saturday morning for real estate continuing education classes then drive to St. Louis in the afternoon on Saturday, stay til 9pm then drive back to KC, getting home around 1 or 2am! I much prefer this!

BTW Kevin... when you go to the KCBS Web site, click on Classes and choose "Judging Classes", this is what you get:

Where did you come up with the link above? Weird!

Crap! Just figured it out! Those you listed appear to be cooking classes, Kevin! I just sent an email to the guy in St. Louis to remove me from his list for the Jan 21 class! Oh well, surely there'll be something closer to home before May 25!

Sorry about that Jeff, must be a small glitch on KCBS web site. This is a copy and paste from the page I linked.

Well Jeff, I'm not thrilled with the time change:eek: , in fact I don't think I will be attending the class myself:tongue: - but I will stop by in the afternoon to yak at my friends Troy and Tony of Smokin' T's who will be cooking the food:mrgreen: .

I sure hope to hook up with Kickass Ed.

I can't believe that there will not be a judging class in KC prior to May. No Way!

I also just realized that the CBJ class has now been moved to the same night as the KCBS Awards Banquet in Kansas City! That totally bites! I'll be attending the banquet that night to help honor some really deserving people. I'll grab CBJ training some other time...

But the time of day that the class is offered is lousy and I just don't believe that the next CBJ class in KC isn't until MAY!

OK I misread that. Although I agree that the time is lousy, I think I'll go ahead and try to get that done since it is on the 28th if those folks at St. Richards will still have me... I've apparently registered twice AND cancelled!

I heard they're in a little turmoil over this class. They had it set up for 25 to 30 people, and are now expecting like 80.

Don't know who is in turmoil. I visited with Ed Roith about it on Saturday night at the KCBS Awards banquet and he was aware of it and didn't outwardly appear to be concerned about it.

OK. Does anybody have any solid info? If you are enrolled and have a contact #, use it. If you have a solid source that ther is a problem feel free to let it be known, but be ready to back it up if it turns out you are wrong.

I'm not pointing ANY FINGERS. I just want to make sure that no unfounded rumor is started here.

Again, I don't want anybody to feel singled out. if you in any way feel that I did feel free to PM me so we can discuss it and if needed I'll make a public apology.

What do you mean no longer connected. You gave us the start to all of this!
We will have the table captains. They might be wearing orange and in hand cuffs but we will get them. (GRIN)

The AshMan,
Table Smable. I'll be there no matter what. It is ONLY BBQ. In my opinion, (and remember, I am nobody!!!) I think some people take this BBQ thing "WAY TOO SERIOUSLY." It's a bunch of people throwing meat in a steel contraption that has a little fire and smoke. It AIN'T SCIENCE!!!!!! or a national defense issue!!!!!!
Your Class will be fine abd we'll all have fun and learn a few things.
See Ya Saturday!!!!

Have a good time KABBQ,

The table captains job is non existant in a judging class, your mom could do it. Its the instructor that is telling you how to spot Kale from parsley, and we didnt learn jack from our table captains. They were strictly there to show the boxes, then pass around.

In fact, Greg and I were at 1 table of 6, and our captain was working 2 and 3 tables.

It's only BBQ for god's sake, not religion!

Was a grueling 5 hour session but I am now a KCBS certified Judge!! Whoo HOO!! I have never been so underwhelmed with the meat that we judged. They said "don't bother eating before the class because there will be plenty of BBQ" This is how it went-- The class started at 5:00 pm and was supposed to last untill 9:00 pm. It went untill 10:00 pm. There were 84 people in the class. Each table had about 6 judges. They brought out 3 boxes per table for us to judge. Long story short---Alot of 6's and 7's. Left there kind of hungry as did most. Did get to meet some of the brethren there. Jeffie was wearing his Brethren sweatshirt and a guy came up to us and introduced himself as a brother!! Too cool !! He recognised the logo!! Met Ed ( KickassBBQ) Real nice guy and his partner in crime. Did not stay for the free Beer and mixed drinks after. Got home about 12:00 pm. Glad it's over!!

I agree with Jay... WAY grueling class! But I feel like maybe I learned a few things that will help. The best part was Ed Roith (instructor) asking all the folks why they scored the way they did if they scored to either extreme. It certainly gives me an idea of what the thought process for judges might be.

Like Jay, I too am glad it's over! I didn't stay for the free booze afterwards either. I drove back to the KC area, getting home just before 2am. LOOONG day! Had one picture taken with me, Ed, Jay and Randy (Randawg), the brother Jay mentioned us meeting. Afterwards, as I was leaving, because of the sweatshirt, I also met Jim (River City Smokehouse).

Hey guys. Just got back from St Louis. It was cool meeting everyone. Jeff, i'm glad you wore your Brethren sweatshirt, b/c I haven't been checking the boards lately and had no idea who'd be there. Cool meeting you too Jay and Ed! Yup, no booze for me either. I did see a bunch of people chugging down their beers before they left, i but thought otherwise about it :)

Man, i got back to my in-laws and they asked how the BBQ was. I told them it was the same as some of those chain BBQ restaurants.. disappointing.. Oh well, I guess I can cut them some slack since they were cooking for 84 people and trying to cook each category in 3 different ways.

Kale? Red tipped lettuce? Never seen them before until that night... Funniest thing for me was when Ed Roith talked about some judges barely sampling their stuff so they can take it home later...

See you guys around,

Randawg

Yep, it was definitely one long day. I am sure the class could have been better if it had been smaller, but I still learn a wealth of information. I think that it allowed me to open my eyes a bit more as to what I should be producing as far as my product goes. I still think that a lot of judges use personal preferences to judge instead of what KCBS wants you to use.
Any, it was a great time and very nice meeting you Jeff. I wish we could have visited longer. By the way, did you find the White Castle? We did and between Mo-Dave and I we spent $40.

I hope we did corrupt you by seeing the remants of 60 sliders that we had at O'dark 30. You get strange looks when you or 60 sliders an Oring and a diet Coke....
