View Full Version : when to become aTable Captain

Now don't get me wrong I'm not just some eater. There always seems to be a shortage of Table captains
And I'm pretty sure there are restrictions on moving towards Master Judge status on how many table capataining experiences you can have as part of the total number of events judged.

So is becoming a Table captain shooting yourself in the foot if there are limited events in your area? I'm in MN and have 8 contests under my judging belt.

There is a Table captain class coming up at the end of March that I'm considering put on by the Bones Brothers in Anoka MN

Advice or opinions?

Table Captain is an optional activity but can be rewarding in many ways. You do not have to take the certification class to do it, but it helps. The class teaches a bit more depth on presentation rules and amplifies the role of the Table Captain in the judging process (essentially a link to the Rep).

Don't worry too much about "captaining" until and unless you're at a comfort level in your basic judging. It is much more important that you become a good judge than anything else! My advice is to take the Table Captain class and enjoy it but don't worry about serving as a Table Captain until you know you're ready. I TC'ed a couple of times before I took the class but then I didn't captain for several contests afterward. Nowadays as both a MCBJ and CTC I'm probably captaining about half the time.

Go ahead and get your feet wet. You can table captain up to 10 times and still get credit towards Master Judge. It won't do anything but make you a better judge.

After you get the TC badge just make sure you're NOT wearing it if you don't want to be a TC at a comp. Having the badge on kinda says "Here I am, put me to work".

I've seen that more than a few times. Seems like sometimes table captain is the short straw

I am a certified table captain, I don't really mind doing it. It is difficult if you do double duty, judging AND captaining tho. And if you have a good crew of volunteers working the leftover table dividing up what's left in the box you still get quite a bit of goodies. Just not much chicken or ribs :tsk:. I am hoping that by being a certified table captain it may give me a little leverage to get invites to contests that are always difficult to get a judge invite, I will see this summer if it helps.

the fee for sugar creek is $40. limited to the first 75 and payment is due by the 19th of april.

As a competitor and certified Judge, I have been a table Capt. a few times. I take the time prior to the first presentation of the first category to explane to the new Judges exactly what each team goes through to be there, be it entry cost, travel expense, meat costs etc. I tell them this because I want them to take their job seriously and know what is at stake. I tell them that if you judge them a 6 or less that I would expect a comment card to let the team know why they were graded that way. I am not telling them to grade up or what to grade, rather justify why they gave the grade of 6 or less when a 7 will knock you out of the race for Grand. If I am wrong, I don't wanna be right.

I did not say what your doing is false, merely it doesn't belong at the table.
I think this is the very reason you should take the class. Neutrality has it's place.

No, I'm not a certified TC. I have done it numorous times and have my reasons for not taking the class. And if Mike or Candy post that I'm wrong I will aploagize profusely.

Not for a Table Captain's class. It's free if you are coming to another CBJ class to refresh. But come on out to Sugar Creek's class. Rich is a great teacher for TC's!!

No, you are not wrong. Table Captain's should not be giving a CBJ or Table Captain's class at their table. A TC may be doing something they feel is helping the table, but they are also swaying the contest by giving their table an edge or a disadvantage. What they should be telling their table is if they want to learn more, take a class. KCBS protocol is to try to keep all contests on the same playing field. If a Table Captain is giving their 2 cents worth at the table, they are giving their2 cents worth, not the KCBS instruction.

I took a TC class before my second year of judging. I didn't do it so much because I wanted to be a TC, but just to try and get a better undestanding of the rules, procedures, etc.

I think the training, and the experience gained with the comps you judge only makes you a better and more knowledgeable judge

Your replies both tell me I'd rather you stay home and watch cartoons on Saturday morning than to come to a contest I was either repping, organizing or competing at.

This mentality is somehow rampant today in this country. At work, at play, even at home it seems. The era of people stepping up and helping each other on their own seems to be gone. At least for the majority of the population.

Ohhh, poor thing. You might have to get up out of that folding chair under the judging tent and move a tray of boxes. Boo-freaking-hoo.

But I bet you leave with your little cooler full of BBQ, huh?

I don't personally know who you are but if you are a rep or organizer you have the one of the worst attitude problems I've encountered on this site.
Your reply is completely out of bounds if you are a representative of either those two factions of BBQ you should step down and do neither again!

I think when I 'retire' from competition, I want to be a table captain. That way, I can just eat whatever I want on the grazing table and not eat the scary stuff. Also, can a table captain get drunk with the teams on friday night?

Really?

Well, viewing the above posts regarding the desire to 'stay hidden' during times where the organizer and/or rep might be looking for some help in putting on as good of a contest for the competitors as possible, I am appalled. I find it outrageous that the judges, whether they are first-timers or master judges/table captains/whatever... would try to get out of doing a few simple chores.

As a competitor, I would appreciate the boxes getting to the judges as fast as possible. I don't care what anyone says, hot food DOES taste better. It's going to have a better texture. And with the fat content in slow-smoked meats, when they start to cool off, the fat and residual connective tissues start to congeal. I don't know if that is appetizing to YOU, but it's not for me.

If I were another judge, table captain, rep or contest organizer, I would surely appreciate a group of judges that show up to a contest and chip in with any items that need to be done. To the best of my knowledge, the trays of boxes don't magically levitate and float to each table and get handed out. The tables and chairs don't get laid out in an efficient manner.

Baaaaad attitude. What a bad attitude it is as a competitor to show up to a contest and hope for a good organizer, rep and competent judges to show up, do their job and anything else that might need to be done to put on a good show.
