Any opinions of Kansas City BBQ at E. 14th and E. Court in Des Moines? I noticed it while mapping a visit to Graziano Bros. and can't recall ever being aware of it before. Thanks!

Any new places open up since last May?

I think that they are closed (again) because of poor sales, poor food quality, poor treatment of customers. I went there twice, about a year apart, and both times walked away disappointed. They closed soon after that for about six months then re-opened for awhile - now it looks like they're closed again.

Two good places in DSM are Smokey D's and Woody's Smoke Shack.

Thanks, Dave.

I've been to both Woody's and Smokey D's, although the day I went to Woody's it was too crappy to eat outside so I didn't get any photos. I might make a return visit just to remedy that if the weather's better.

For non-barbecue Hessen Haus looks interesting and it seems like there might be a few good choices in that part of town.

You could try Barratta's (sp?) on South Union for some good Italian food or the Big Steer in Ankeny for the Prime Rib, both are top-notch eateries.

Actually the Big Steer is in Altoona. Real close to the Bass Pro Shop. Jethro's is another place to try. I like the wings there. Another place to try, if you have time, would be Flying Mango. It has been around for years. They have been doing things on the smoker very well. You can see their smoker out back when you are parking.

There are many great places to eat at here in DM area. If these don't trip your trigger, ask and we can get more places.

If you are gonna be downtown and going to the Hessen Haus, try the Royal Mile, El Bait Shop/High Life Lounge & Fong's Pizza. All owned by the same group of guys and each very unique....you won't be dissapointed! All within walking distance of each other.

I forgot to ask, what are you getting at Graziano's?

Lutefisk.

No idea, really. I just want to check it out and I might buy something if it appeals to me, but it has to either get eaten that weekend or safely transported home so I'll have to remember to bring along a cooler.

I can't remember the last time I went to Flying Mango...maybe I've never even been there! I'd like to try Jethro's sometime but not over Relays because every place around campus is going to be packed. Thursday night will be F&O's for pizza (the Alfredo Topper), Friday night will be the host's choice, and Saturday night is a cookout so I really only have midday Friday when I'll be on my own. Actually, right now a Paul Revere's wedgie sounds pretty good...

Thanks for the suggestions!

Jethro's has 2 new locations. One in Altoona and the other in Waukee.

Sent from my obsolete 3GS iPhone.

I didn't know that...thanks! Since I'll be staying in Urbandale the Waukee location might be a possibility.

It's on University west of 80/35.

OK, about a week to go until my trip so I've started rechecking my plans.

Is anybody familiar with Findlay's Smokehouse on Indianola Ave.? According to Google Maps it's a short hop from Grazianos' to there.

Findlays is alright. If you have time and transportation I would look elsewhere.

Nothing turned out to go as planned so the only place I ate at in DSM was Viva La Bamba (http://vivalabamba.com/index.html) in Urbandale, which was decent.

However, on the way there I had a pretty good pulled pork sandwich from Ol' Town Eats (http://oltowneats.com/) in Olin. I hadn't planned on it but after seeing the smokers I circled the block and parked.

There was some definite smoke flavor to the meat and the smoked provolone cheese was a nice albeit nontraditional touch.

Even though they were open the dining room was dark and empty (possibly because 1:30pm is after lunch and well before dinner) so I got my sandwich to go, which worked out well because there's a little park just down the street and I was able to sit at a picnic table to eat and relax for a bit.
