Are there benefits to this sort of firebox configuration, as opposed to hanging off the end (typical offset) ?

You end up with heat being distributed across the full length of the pit cutting down on hot spots, both styles work.

Do you maintain 3 or 4 small fires?

Do you have to keep a forklift at home to move it? Looks heavy as heck. Interesting design though.
With that size smoker you don't mess around. Start with a couple bags of Kingsford and a couple of serious splits all fired off with a propane brush burner.
Fire management on these big cookers (I think that's either a Southern Yankee or Austin National) is get it hot and then maintain. Ain't nothing subtle. The rotisserie also helps moderate any potential hot spots since the shelves rotate about 1 rpm.
