SNEAK PEEK: Smoke on the Water will be releasing a statement along with CBS, Academy of Country Music Awards and the Mandalay Bay tomorrow announcing our partnership.

The Academy of Country Music is raising the stakes at Mandalay Bay by hosting the fourth annual USA Barbecie Championship in Las Vegas March 30 & 31, 2012.

April Fool’s weekend, country music fans, barbecue fans and championship barbecue teams will descend upon Mandalay Bay for an unparalleled experience at one of Vegas’s grandest venues and what has become known as one of the premier barbecue competitions in the world.

“The USA Championship was created to bring the best of the best barbecue teams to Las Vegas,” said Ron Cates, event organizer. “Even though there is big money up for grabs, it’s really about more than that; it’s about respect among their peers. Those that compete in this contest know the winner will be recognized as the number one barbecue team on the planet.”

“Mandalay Bay is thrilled and proud to host this premier event during the ACM Experience weekend,” said Mandalay Bay Vice President of Entertainment Chris Baldizan. “We welcome the professional barbecue teams and believe the festival will add a tremendous amount of excitement and is something Las Vegas will embrace for years to come.”
According to organizers, the 2012 USA BBQ Championship will rank among the biggest barbecue competitions ever held, thanks in part to the partnership with the Acadamey of Country Music and Mandalay Bay.

“We are known for hosting big events at Mandalay Bay, and we believe the barbecue competition will just add to the ACM experience and atmosphere. Everything about it fits with our property,” said Baldizan.

Besides the barbecue competition, there will be an Eat & Greet with the Zac Brown Band, live entertainment all weekend featuring the biggest names in country music, world class rib vendors, amateur Ribba-Ramma, Dodge Ram obstacle course, outdoor living and cowboy expo, rib eating championship, kids fuzone and much more.

Who's planning on making the trip besides us? See ya there!

Not yet...last year the total prize money was $125,000.00. I would expect as much or more this year.

I heard a rumor that it was going to be a $100,000 grand champion, but again, just a rumour. I'd love to compete there but that's quite a drive for me, 5000 miles roundtrip.

Definitely a nice contest, but not the $100k GC everyone hoped for, and $75k less than the $125k payout that drew 90 teams earlier this year.

It will be interesting to see what the buzz is on this one now. Will teams still be coming from all over to partake given the "pay cut"? Much harder to break even or win 'the big one' now.

Again, still a real nice chunk of change...but will it be enough to bring in the big guns?

roksmith
12-12-2011, 07:12 PM
Don't know about the big guns, but this little gun won't be driving across country now. I can compete 5 or 6 more times around here for what I would spend to go there. Too bad their sponsors didn't come thru like they thought. Sounded like fun.

I was just reading on their facebook page that they have the $50k committed and signed while a lot of the remaining money is just waiting to be finalized. Looks and sounds like the $50k is what they had guaranteed today so that's the number they posted rather than the number they will likely end up with.

I do like that they are only promising what they have committed and nothing more. We don't need promoters promising more than they can deliver. But with the cost of fuel these days I just don't see people coming across country with such a small chance of breaking even. Definitely a good comp for those of us within a day's drive though.

After January 10, the only way to book these rooms will be on line with access codes. (access codes to be distributed in early January)
These hotel rates are for your vendors and teams ONLY, the only way to book these rooms is thru the attached form BEFORE January 10 or with an access code AFTER January 10. Teams and vendors will NOT be able to use this form AFTER January 10.

MGM GRAND
Wednesday, March 28 - $109
Thursday, March 29 - $109
Friday, March 30 - $159
Saturday, March 31 - $199
Sunday, April 1 - $199
Monday, April 2 - $159
Tuesday, April 3 - $109

*Each room is subject to applicable taxes and a $10 resort fee.

MANDALAY BAY
Wednesday, March 28 - $109
Thursday, March 29 - $109

Saturday, March 31 - $199
Sunday, April 1 - $199

Going to have codes soon for several properties. There are several events going on along with the ACM Awards. Vegas is booked and we're in the middle of it. If you give me two more weeks, I'll have the codes on the website or you can email me and I can give you the information above. And please remember, the Mandalay Bay is a five star resort. We have several choices to fit every budget.

The regular room rates are out of control. Here are the rates I got off Mandalay Bay's website.

3/28 $270.00 3/29 $85.00 3/30 $200.00 3/31 $225.00

Some days are the same, same are cheaper and some are more expensive. Go figure.

JD - This might help you out.
My BBQ folks, please remember that the Mandalay Bay is a five star resort and cost a little more than an average hotel. We would love for everybody to stay on property, but there are several options to choose from that are less than a mile from the event site with $29 rates during week and $69 weekend. ACM Awards and big concerts, which we're part of make hotel rooms fill up. I'm working hard to get everybody the best deal I can. When you add in the VIP parties, Fan Jam and tickets to the awards show, it's a helluva deal and a true experience. We understand money is tight for everybody, but this partnership with ACM and Mandalay Bay is really priceless. You couldn't purchase tickets to see entertainment like this. I do understand this is a barbecue event first, but we're trying to make this a destination point which is must attend event. Every famous country artist in the world will be here along with a minimum of $50,000 right now. Promise that will grow once contracts are signed. Hang in there with us!

That is still $100 off the regular room rates.

If this deal was for TheHotel as well it would be worth it just for the cheap hotel room. I wouldnt stay anywhere else in Vegas. Mandalay Bay and TheHotel are awesome rooms and you have access to top flight restaurants and spas right in the hotel...

We've been planning on attending this event all year. Last year I personally wasn't that impressed with the Orleans so I'm really looking forward to Mandalay Bay. Better dining options, nicer rooms, a better VIP party, better facility, etc. makes it a go for us. I'm not sure where the money is going to end up but we will be in.

I can actually book for less/same combining room and flight through allegiant...kind of odd I thought. Around $600 per person at Mandalay.

If it is only for showering you guys should split the room to reduce cost.

I thought I saw a previous post about renting smokers, ez ups, etc. we're seriously considering this if we can fly (wife freaked when she got on the computer and saw mapquest directions from Virginia to Vegas "yeah honey about that..."). Does anyone know who I could contact about this? I cook on UDS's so I was actually thinking about flying out with my hardware, buying two drums and doing a quick build on site. Thanks.

The regular room rates are out of control. Here are the rates I got off Mandalay Bay's website.

3/28 $270.00 3/29 $85.00 3/30 $200.00 3/31 $225.00

Some days are the same, same are cheaper and some are more expensive. Go figure.

Vegas has a number of resorts that are tourist destinations in their own right, and they are priced accordingly. Mandelay Bay is one of these. If you think that is expensive, you want to stay away from The Venetian, The Winn, The Aria, and The Bellagio websites. :becky:

That said, there are still old style "cheap rooms for gamblers" if you stay in the older resorts. Excalibur, for example, is nearby, still on the strip, and connected by tram to the Mandelay Bay. It's $55 a night, and $115 for Fri/Sat nights. If you go further away or off the strip, you can do better than that.

I got my barrel from here http://stores.ebay.com/The-Barrel-Company Paid around $35 for a reconditioned open head barrel. If I had a vehicle that would haul it, I'd volunteer my UDS for you.
