I just joined this site and i am a little confused. I am looking for the ultimate bbq experience. You guys seemed true and real. I am not familiar with the "banderas" grill, but it seems to be the common bond. I am getting ready to build a new "Q" and thought you guys might have some imput. If you are ever down Ky way give a shout-- dont't be shy. We party hard and grill even harder-- if someone of the same vein is around!!! Any input on the "Q" is greatly appreciated.

What he said

The knowledge base is up north here, tell us what you want to know.

The Southerners. Well, they drink Kentucky crap :)

Seriously, specifics of what you want to know

Welcome Fatboy. The Bandera is a smoker with a large vertical cooking chamber and a horizontal offset firebox.

what i had in mind is utilizing 2 (55) gallon, closed top drums and doing some sort of offset smoker. maybe one for a fire box-- one for the pit with a water tray. Ideally these could just hold beer if I can find one of these Banderas pits around here. I would even consider building one if I had the plans. Any ideas are good ones! Must be off-- going to put some skrimps ( yes, skrimps!) on the grill. We raise fresh water shrimp in the area they're really good but a little different so we call'em skrimps. They outlawed moonshine, growin' dope is illegal, Damn near ruined the tabacco farmer... I guess you gotta do something with all this wonderful limestone water!!!

I've seen a design for barrels with them set lengthwise, one above the other - the lower barrel is a full length firebox - kind of like Southern Yankee and Austin National cookers!! :D Seems there were two "pipes" between the chambers.

I'll see if I can dig up some pics.

now that you say that it seems like I have seen that before if you had some pics that would be great!!! You know this site is like some great bbq underground! What a movement ; is there enough brethren to form a new political party? not the like the green party --I'm think'n something in blue... Republicans have the elephant, democrats have the donkey market cornered!!! What about a pig???

Methinks you'd have to be mindful of that firebox so close to the ground.

Are these cabinet smokers I see in pics on the site custom or "home-built?" I have no problem using these drums for various and sundry different applications --if'n I could just score me one of them there smokers I see everyone a usin'!!! If I can't, I guess I could round up smaller drums for the firebox and go for one of them sidecar models. Sort of do a two-fer. No concrete pad -- then it ain't mobile. Not lookin' to drive a caddy just somethin that is roadworthy AND sharp. I guess I have no problem with a buick or an oldsmobile. That being said- if the caddy is the same price with a drive... I'd definitely be up for the drive!! Kinda jonesin' thinkin' bout butt and brisket. My last one experienced a fiery death and a burial at river. however many cocktails later and a Webber we still ate well-- by God!!!

That is the Bandera style smoker

And it is called a "bandera style" smoker, because originally there was a smoker called the bandera. It is both a smoker and now has come to be known as a style.
