View Full Version : WooooHooooo
Heads a little fuzzy from celebrating but I had to post this as soon as I woke up. I donated a barbeque dinner for 20 featuring brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and chicken for an auction fund raiser the parish school I graduated from 32 years ago holds every year to raise monies for their athletic and arts programs. The description in the program was, "PICNIC FOR 20 PEOPLE''!!!! Luckily I found this out the night before so my wife made table tent cards that read:
AUTHENTIC SOUTHERN BBQ
FEATURING SLOW SMOKED BEEF BRISKET,
GENUINE PULLED PORK, SMOKED CHICKEN
& CHAMPIONSHIP RIBS
LOVINGLY PREPARED BY
“HESS LAKE FARM RIBFEST” CHAMPIONS
NEIL VERNASCO-2004 & JASON KRYSKA-2003
My wife and I were tending bar at the event and placed the cards on the bar promoting the dinner while we were fixing drinks. It paid off big time.
The dinner went for $2600.00!!! Now all I have to do is perform to my satisfaction. It better be good because someone just put down a big wad of money for a meal I am going to prepare. Can you say baptism under fire? I'm hoping this will eventually turn into a full time catering business. The table of people that had the winning bid included some who had experienced my efforts in the search for Q nirvana in the past. I have to admit that once the bidding passed $1000.00 it was a real rush watching three groups bidding against each other for something I was going to cook.

Sounds like an awesome time will be had by the twenty people as well as you doing the cooking.
Excited and scared mod, but confident all at the same time. Didn't know that was possible.

That must have been a fun evening! Congrats, and good luck on the picnic/barbeque!
Yes it was and a lot of work too. I've tended bar at this event for 16 of the last 18 years. My non-catholic friends are amazed that liquor is served in a school. No kids are present and it loosens the purse strings. The event was moved to the new elementary school gymnasium this year for the first time and there were over 300 people in attendance for a $100 a plate dinner of lobster tail, beef tender loin, chicken breast, wild rice, potatoes, and fresh asparagus with holandaise sauce. Price of admission included the open bar. They got their monies worth. BTW, the bar tenders get a free meal.

I'm proud of you Neil. I know a bit of what you speak. I used to cook clam chowder for about 100 paying customers at an anual event. Nothing to do but put your head down, keep your feet movin' and pots flyin'. When it's all over everyone is sitting around patting their stomachs and a toothpick in their teeth and there's nothing left to do but the dishes. Nothing like your $2600 feed with multiple courses though. On the liquor subject, I used to be a professional mover and the largest liquor supply I ever relocated, bar none belonged to a Catholic priest.

Congrats, sounds like some fun. Sitting there hearing the bidding go up over a meal you are going to cook. I would have had to leave from the pressure. Bet the old ticker started pounding as the numbers kept climbing. Let us know how the event turns out after the cook

Dude! That is so awesome! You should really be proud!
I am volunteering to cook for to guys who work at our church. One does the cleaning in the auditorium where we have service and the other does the sound engineering for our band and pastors. Our small group wanted to show our appreciation for these unsung guys.
Nowhere near as awesome as what you are doing though!!

That is cool. I just decided today that the next time I cook, I am going to do up some extra slabs of ribs for the guy that volunteers all of his time to run our community owned saloon and the president of our association. I am also going to do a rib night at th bar for the benefit of the neighborhood.
Awesome, Neil! I know you'll do a great job!

I'm amazed they're amazed. Nuff said.
And way to go Neil. I am sure you will give us the blow by blow afterwords.
I hope to find out soon when they want to have the cookout. I did find out today it is going to be at the doctor's house on Lake Michigan. I'm getting psyched already.
