I just made a baffle out of galvanized metal for my bandera smoke chamber - foil finally gave out. My question is there any toxicity involved with heating galvanized metal up in a food cooking chamber? I know that toxic fumes are released when galvanized metal is welded and didn't know if a fire box got hot enough to cause any problems.
On a second note, I have learned more about my smoker and the art of smoking in the last two days lurking on this site than I have in the last 10 years of smoking meat. I'm not the expert I thought I was :D Thanks!!

Galvanized is not a good choice. As the galvanizing finish burns off it releases toxic gases.

Plain sheet metal or aluminum won't gas you!

Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace, etc. Some guys have used aluminum flashing.

Please go to Walmart and get you a cookie sheet and remake your baffle.....we want you to be around awhile.........

Or check Lowes or Home Depot for a piece of stainless.......I think mine was $30.00, but I got a baffle for me and JT, plus a heat shield out of it.........

Guess I'll use it for a pattern when I make a new one tonight. Thanks for the info. S.Watts

A pattern is a good use for it. And then head over to Cattle Call and introduce yourself.

NO...NO....NO...Steel is galvanized with Zinc, a heavy metal that is TOXOC....TOXIC...TOXIC. You might as well cook with Lead or Mercury, because Zinc poisoning is just as bad. Just about the only thing worse is Plutonium. With heavy metal poisoning there is also no way to ever get it out of your system. It is stored in the fat and there it stays till doomsday. Heating it will permiate your food with the stuff and cause some serious health issues that can even be passed on to children and grand children. You do need Zinc in really-really-low doses as part of your diet but at those levels it is not toxic. Never cook or store food in anything galvanized or.....or.....YOUR DOOMED!.

(Even serious messages contain humor. Really get rid of the galvanized metal in your cooker fast and wash it out really good if you have already used it. One cookoff is probably not that bad but it is not good either.)
