I will be in Wilkesboro in a couple of weeks. I am thinking I want some authentic NC BBQ no matter what I may think of the sauce.
Any suggestions ?
I have no recommendations for you, but do feel you're going in to the experience with a bad attitude. You're already turned off by the notion of the sauce used in Lexington country. I do wish you the best of luck and hope you find a good restaurant instead of a so-so one that you likely will be turned off by even more.
At least a great restaurant 'might' be able to sway your opinion a little if they use their sauce the way it was intended.
Good luck.

Hate to break it to you my man, but you're on the wrong side of the state.

Cliff, I live in Hickory which is about 45 or 50 minutes south of Wilkesboro. There is a place in Wilkesboro that isn't too bad actually... It's called Brushy Mountain Smokehouse & Creamery.

It's been a while since I have been up there but it might be worth a try. It's probably gonna be your best bet in Wilkesboro. Hope this helps!

One of the best q-joints that I've ever been to in "western" NC is "Tipton's Bar-B-Que" in Wilksboro! I've eaten chopped pork barbecue at 323 q-joints in NC to date and list Tipton's in my top 10!
Try it, you just might like it!!!:-D

You want to go to Lexington if you prefer a little ketchup in your vinegar sauce, aka "BBQ Dip". Lexington No.1 and The BBQ Center are the 2 most popular.
Near Boone is "Woodlands BBQ"
In Greensboro try Stamey’s Barbecue
In Raleigh, Clyde Coopers for a 'Joint', the Pit for the most upscale BBQ resturant in the state..
If you're really serious about North Carolina BBQ no need to stop in the western side of the state; you must go east to the first stop on the NC BBQ Trail..
