Congrats to all !!!!

It was nice to see everyone on Saturday... planned to but could not make it back out today.

Extra plus for me was getting to spend a good amount of time w/ Paul Kirk... learned quite a bit, got me re-motivated and was quite a character that did not hold anything back !!

Phil - Outstanding job.... I hope you are taking a vacation somewhere after this !!!!!!!!

Congrats to IQUE and Swamp Pit. What a great weekend, our turn-in's weren't exactly up to par but we got to spend some time with some good friends (Frank, Bob, and Laura from Blazin' Butts, The Out of the Ashes crew, Julie & Skip, Clint, etc.), awesome neighbors (Smoke N Barrel, Chubby Hubby, RXcellentQ), and got to meet some really nice folks who are new to competing (Rocco's Rubs & Pigman and the Sounders) and isn't that what it's really all about? A HUGE thank you to Phil, the owner and staff of The Maples, and everyone who worked to put on such a great competition at such a nice and welcoming venue.

Congrats to IQUE & and Swamp Pit! I think Chris is the next BBQ legend. Skip and Juli's reaction to getting called for RGC was priceless. You guys are awesome!

Also Congrats to Blazin Buttz for GC on grilling!

"Thank you" to Phil, the Maples and everyone that worked so hard to make this event as great as it was. We had a blast!

As always it was great to see everyone. We had a great time hanging with the guys from Smokers Lounge, and Willie's Golf cart pit stops at our site were freakin hilarious every time.

Congrats Swamp Pit on Reserve and to everyone who got calls.

Nice job Phil organizing this contest.

Thumbs up on taking the ferry, burning a few hours off of the commute sitting at a bar watching sox/yanks was well worth the money

I ended up judging this year instead of competing (went to Florida and didn't have enough time or money when I got back to do it correctly. Will be competing next year.)

I can say as a judge that the samples I was getting at this comp were above average. I never really get bad Q while judging at comps, but the stuff I was getting yesterday seemed, on average, better than usual. So, great job to all the teams. My taste buds really appreciated it.

And I can't speak for all of the judges. I'm just telling what my experience was.

We had a great time this weekend. It didn't feel the same without the Brethren "wind driven" rain we are used to. lol Glad to see some new faces and talk to everyone. Wished our turn ins had done a little better but I can say this was the best one we've done yet. Great venue. Saw Bob (Maples) working on an electrical panel to get things fixed and then found out later on he was the owner. Great people. Flawless from our standpoint. Phil, I don't know how you did it. To all who helped on the planning, and execution of the event a heart felt thank you. Congrats to IQue, our friends from Swamp Pit and Blazin' Butts for continuing the grilling success. Matt

Congratulations to IQue, nicely done. The evnt was outstanding. I know Phil felt like he was managing a three ring circus but Skip, Sled, Paul, and him did a fantastic job pulling this off. Excellent venue. I thought the folks at the Maples were very good to us, and the other sponsors seemed to have gone the extra mile as well. You couldn't ask for more. It was good to see some familiar faces and talk with the teams. Thanks to everybody for making it a great weekend.

my guess is it disappeared during awards. My friends were still at my site and said people were just wandering on to peoples cook sites, opening up bbq's and helping themselves to whatever they found. Hugely disconcerting, unfortunately we all can't be brethren

Huge congrats to Ique on the GC and to Swamp Pit for RGC. We were supposed to be here this year, but work kept us from coming. Hopefully it will work out next year. It sounds like it was a superb event. I know Phil worked tirelessly on getting this one off the ground and I'm so glad to hear it was such a success. Congrats and WTGs all around.

This weekend priceless:

$500 worth of electronics stolen as you go to see the results.

well well that was fun: if you know someone who has an extra

PSP PLAYER
or
IPOD TOUCH......THAT DID NOT BELONG TO THEM

let me know, i would like it back.................

Thats why I always stay back at the site during the awards ceremony. I have done this ever since I returned from the awards ceremony at Rock 'n Ribfest in New Hampshire a few years back only to find someone trying to remove the BBQ Guru from our Spicewine.

That f'n sucks! They probably broke in to my cambro, tasted my chicken and were so pissed they went looting.

Jokes aside, I'll often put locks on my trailer when I go to awards and even watch what I leave out overnight. We cooks are family but you never know who is wandering around.

how can we set up something like a long island points chase for next year. Have like 3 LI comps, and reserve prize money from each to give to the overall leader, we already have williepallooza, battle of the brethren, i know we would definitely do 1 or 2 more if they were local. Traveling further than the island is difficult for a lot of us.

What a fun time! It was great to see so many old and new friends while doing the 'que that we love to do...Huge thanks to Phil, Willie B, Sled and The Jacked Up crew, Julie and Skip, Phil/Guido from BBQ Mafia, The EdcueQators and everyone else that donated time, food and moral support. I don't want to leave anyone out, but it was so hectic that I know I'm forgetting folks.

Bottom line-- a great brethren event, raising money for a good cause and spending time with awesome people. A++++ I hope to be back next year and every year after...

I had a great time with a couple of total newbs working with me in Phils trailer. Many thanks to all the cooks that directed people to the black trailer with the pig. Man some of those people are real a-holes!! Phenomenal job by poobah, but also Sharon and Jackie and Mike and Ryan and especially James...Man that kid has matured on so many levels since I first met him! That family pulled together to support Phil and it was impressive as hell to watch.
Yeah, a couple of glitches but otherwise I really learned a lot doing this solo for the first time. Always be sure the hopper has pellets...twice I was a farking moron and ran out pellets. That's phils Job!!!! :) missed not cooking with him. Had great flavors I felt, and walked in chicken at a 6th place. I was thrilled.

Even though we didn't walk on Sunday, it was a thrill to win the desert catagory on Saturday with a score within 1.2 points of perfection at 178.8. You just can't put a price on the fun we had this past weekend. Long live the Battle of the BBQ Brethren in Manorville. Manorville: BBQ Battle post-game
Monday August 8, 2011 5:13 PM By Erica Marcus

Phil Rizzardi is a happy man. Exhausted but happy. The organizer of the 5th Annual Battle of the BBQ Brethren, which took place over the weekend in Manorville, said that the event “could not have been more of a success.”
Rizzardi estimates that about 2,500 people attended the two-day affair. Between the admission fees and food sales, Make-A-Wish of Suffolk, the beneficiary, collected about $5,000 in donations.
On Saturday, 18 teams took part in a grilling competition. The grand champion was a Patchogue team, Blazin’ Butts. Second place went to Ed-QUE-cators (Northport) and third to Centereach’s Smokin’ Irish. The top four grilling finishers also competed in a “Chopped”-style mystery-basket grilling “shootout” against Paul Kirk, a. k. a Baron of Barbecue, world champion many times over and partner* of RUB BBQ, the Manhattan barbecue restaurant that is set to open an East Meadow branch later this month. The shootout winner was Ed-QUE-cators, who took the preferred lamb chops, eggplant and jicama and made a Jamaican-inspired meal.
On Sunday, 42 teams competed in a New York State championship sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. The grand champion was team IQUE, most of whose members live in Massachusetts. This was a huge win for IQUE, according to Rizzardi. “It was the tenth consecutive year that these guys won one at least one grand championship. There are very few teams in that circle.” Second place went to Wantagh’s own Swamp Pit and third went to Fat Guys in a Little Smoke, hailing from Long Island, New York and Westchester. Click here for the complete results.
The winners: Ethan, right, 13, and his father Chris Hart, of Hopkinton, M.A., competing as IQUE, celebrate as the N.Y. State BBQ champions during the 2011 Battle of the BBQ Brethren in Manorville.

As someone who is looking to compete next year, I went to this event to try and get some pointers and advice. My first stop was the McFrankenboo pit who among the many tips, told us to stop by the tents with the BBQ Brethren banners. It was probably the best advice I got all day. Everyone was great and more than willing to talk and offer advice to a beginner. I just wanted to say thanks to all you who took the time to talk and help a beginner. Congratulations to all. It was a great event.

ok.. So I am 80% healed. The event, so far exceeded my expectations that I cant even see what the old ones were anymore and have raised the bar for next year. I had more fun at this event than I have had competing at any event in 7 years. As much work as it was, seeing the reactions from the teams, and the public, was more gratifying than any GC.

The gifts awarded to Sharon and myself during the awards ceremony left me somewhat speechless, and reinforced the feelings I have towards the members of the Brethren and teams.. youre an amazing bunch of folks. The level of support I received was NOT limited to my family and those that helped organize, but EVERY team out there. Make-A-Wish was asked to send 20-25 volunteers, and they sent 7. It was the Brethren members and teams that picked up the slack. Things got very hectic at times and not once did someone turn me away when i asked for help.. this was really a BBQ Brethren event, run my the members of this forum.

Skip, Westex and Eric worked their tales off to get our necessities like Electric, portapotties, golf carts, etc.. and then got some luxurious like the pig for the VIP tent, concert tickets for raffles and free/reduced fares on the cross sound ferries for our New England competitors.

Then the full logistics team, Willyb and Rub helping with vending. Sled, Paul and my family running their asses off all weekend in golf carts making sure folks had what they needed. (Ques your daddy also ran the car show and made great mac n cheese :thumb: ). Steve and Vinny helped Sharon clean up the tent around midnight after the pot luck dinner when my feet refused to cooperate. BBQ Mafia and Santa Frank got lunch going in the VIP tent and Jacked up covered our ass for vending in case we sold out of food.. A highpoint... Jeremy from out of the ashes drove around with me giving out breakfast in the sunday morning typhoon... and another team, its such a blur...and I dont even remember which team name it was, scrambled and set the tables up for the ultimate grilling challenge.. (cmalanga...the guys with the mohawk.. thanks!! )It was amazing... I can not be more grateful.

The event was such a success because of all the folks under the canopies. :clap2:

i have not started the final accounting for the make a wish donation.. but I am hoping it will exceed $5000.

I had one of my heavy 10 gauge, 50 foot extension cords running power direct from he generator to the back of the field, thru the treeline where the car show was... it was just laying on the ground at the end of the contest and unplugged from the generator.. the teams nearby there were Roccos Rubs, BBQ Mafia, and Shake and Bake..

Phil, it was an immense pleasure to meet you and also as many of the Brethren and other crews as we could go and meet. Truly a fun and gracious group of folks. It was a blast to have met so many of you.

Both days we had the chance to interact with the public and I have to say that pretty much everyone who came out for this event each day enjoyed themselves very much. Everybody was saying how impressed they were with the event and also said how great it was that many of the crews took the time out of their incredibly busy day to chat with them and extoll the virtues of the Fine Art Of BBQ.

Hats of to the Brethren and all the folks who made this one of the top events of the year on Long Island!

The guys helping with the set up during the grilling were BAD ASS bbq. Great guys. Its amazing how everyone came together to make the event a success. Everyone wanted to see the event be a success and no one wanted to see it fail. Everyone took it personal. Sled worked his azz off. NICE JOB bro. I dont think people will realize how much you did because you kind of were behind the scenes but the event could not have gone off the way it did without your hard work. What was also great was that when someone asked someone else to help out, there were no questions, it was done. No one had an ego, attitude or blog to write down mistakes. And of course it was already said but James, mike, Jackie and the dirty garbage t shirt kid Ryan were amazing. They didnt have to be there but showed up and didnt just go thru the motions. They worked HARD. Phil, it was already said but you have to be proud of James. I am. And best moment of the weekend is me standing next to phils wife and a lady asking if she was my mother. She almost died laughing. I told her i will never call Phil DAD. Proud to be a Brethren. Proud to call you guys friends.

One of your newbs checking in here.

Scott, thank you very much for inviting me to be part of your team and giving me a peak into the world of competitive bbq.

While I had expected to learn a thing or two to take my backyard skills to another level, my biggest impressions were the friends I made and being a part of something good on so many levels.

I loved the way all of you joked with each other, jumped to lend each other a hand, took the time to talk with the public (or show a newbie a thing or two), all the while competing at the highest level.

I also want to thank Phil's family. Not only did I get to see them attend to the hundreds of tasks at hand needed to run an event of this size, but they made this stranger feel like I was a welcome guest in their home (even if it was just the trailer).

And now let me take a minute to think back and reflect on my first walk through at 6:30 Saturday morning, when I experienced the aroma of smoke in every direction in the quiet before the chaos. It was like nothing I had ever experienced. I was alone in my thoughts, a little anxious having no idea what to expect, hoping I wouldn't get in the way or do something stupid and cost someone the competition.

And in that peaceful moment, through the blue hue of smoldering wood, the voice of one chef calling out to another competitor to let him know he was the ugliest mother -------- he knew!

Congratulations to all of you for a weekend worth remembering.

Funniest moment for me was someone stopping by our tent looking for a friend. He was told his friend would be at the team flying a BBQ Brethren banner.

Uh, ya, kinda the wrong event to use that to find a team.

We always liked Sayville, despite the flooding and the power that dropped to 32 volts sometimes, but Maples was a better venue, a well run contest, and a great experience worthy of the BBQ Brethren. Amazing considering Phil wasn't even sure there would be a contest 100 days ago.

I'm looking for a picture that someone took at the awards.

After we got our 1st Place rib trophy, my niece (and team member) was holding the trophy just outside of the tent and someone asked if they could take a picture. We turned around and posed for the pic, but unfortunatley I don't know who it was taking the picture. We both had on our Grim Reaper Smoker team shirts.

If you took that picture I would like to get a copy. Please PM me for an email address.

I don't know about anyone else, but i'm upset that this event has already come and gone.
You spend so much time preparing and looking forward to a comp and once it's over you have nothing to look forward to.
I understand that there are other comps to compete in, but this one has such a tight knit family that you don't get at other comps.
I wish there was a brethren competition once a month.
Phil, can you work on that for us?

sure... I'll get right on it..

lets see.. I have to take the 3 weeks prior to the contest off from work to do all the logistics.

So one contest a month, from May thru October, means I would have to work only 6 weeks in 3 months, and then loose my mind for the other 18 weeks. WOW.... Great idea! :twitch:

One suggestion for next year: Please don't have the band start playing music until 2:00pm on Sunday. I was judging this year and they cranked it up right when we were trying to judge brisket. Not only could I not hear the table captain, but it was hard to concentrate on the food when the music was so loud. And it was very loud right by the judge's tent. I don't mind music, but if they could wait until 2:00pm, then the judges would all be done and it's all good after that.

That woman singing was worse than fingernails on a chalkboard.

Hi,

If you happen to have any photos from the event that you wouldn't mind sharing that could be used for marketing of the event for the future, please let me know.

We could use any photos, but specifically, crowd shots would be great.

If the photographer would like to be credited, please include their name and if there are any photos of competitors, please include the team name and their individual names.

Please shoot me an email at

Thank you!

I would agree with Mike about the music. I judged at one of the closest tables to the band. It in no way affected my concentration in judging the Brisket presentation, which was for the most part excellent at our table. It initially was distracting and competed with the table captain, but once I saw the Brisket the music faded into the background. He is correct that the judging should be completed before the MC and Band take the stage...
Overall it was a very good experience...The MC and Band were a glitch..

Yours in BBQ,

Cliff

The gifts awarded to Sharon and myself during the awards ceremony left me somewhat speechless, and reinforced the feelings I have towards the members of the Brethren and teams.. youre an amazing bunch of folks.

For those that were not there or may not have seen, as a token of the teams' appreciation for what Phil has done with this competition he was presented with a custom grill grate, and his lovely daughter Jackie, accepted on his wife's behalf an inflated nitrile glove with enough US Treasury Department issued gift certificates valid at any restaurant in the country for Sharon and Phil to enjoy a nice quiet dinner alone, without us Brethren.

Hey,

I'd like to thank Cox Media and WBAB for their donations for the raffles, as well as Octopus Publishing for the book donations and Bacon Salt for the sample packs.

It was very cool that they all lent a hand and supported the event and cause.
