Let's hear it folks! I can take it. I want to know your first 10 sec reaction. Not your 30 min., "the third leaf on the fifth twig of parsley from the left is a lighter shade of green" reaction.

I'm not a CBJ, but I bet I'm better than judge 6 from my chicken turn in.

Chicken - 9
Ribs and pork - 8
Brisket - 7

Chicken 9 (solid 9)
Ribs 8
Pork 8
Brisket 8

Great looking boxes and the chicken is probably one of the best I have seen....ever!

C-9
R-7/8- looks too dark
P-7/8-needs more pulled/chunks maybe too saucy (could be the picture)
B-7/8- coarse spices on the face of the meat slices

Those are my 5-10 second thoughts. 7/8 would depend on how it looks in person

I like your approach for this "judging" -- 10 seconds is about what we get in a real contest environment -- so I did a fast pass like you asked for. Here's what I saw (I haven't looked back)

Chicken -- great shaping, good coloring, too many in box, though. 8
Ribs -- well cut and nice balance in arrangement 8-9
Pork -- nice symmetry and shine 8
Brisket -- looks dry, box over-stuffed 7

My standard caveat: Pictures aren't as good as the real thing but I like to help out cooks whenever possible.

Overall, pretty impressive.

Hey B. Chicken- spot on -8, Ribs, dark but still gotta have some-7, Pork, hard to tell because of darker color in pic, product still looks good but would like box laid out to be able to see more,7 Brisket looks good with the exception of the stray chunks of seasoning and fat at the bottom, ends pick it up,7. Where was this at? Steve.

My 10 second peek thoughts. A lot of sauce on the chicken, ribs, and pork. I think the chicken looks really good, probably score them a 9. Ribs 8, maybe a 9 at table. I think your pork box looks great, I would call it a 9. The brisket I am sure is just the picture but the burnt ends kind of got lost in the box to me. The slices don't have much shine, again maybe the picture but they look dry. Score 7, maybe an 8 at table.

c-9, r-8, p-9, b-7 Set sauce more on chicken and ribs is what I see and the only thing that could possible improve the chick. like the rub on brisket but don't like the look of it on there or that the slices look cut to fit box. all the boxes had good placement of the meats and garnish IMO.

Chicken 9...... looks great like the fact that the meat fills the box
Ribs 8...... a little dark but I would want to try one
Pork 7...... more pulled in there for my eye any way
Brisket 7...... too much "stuff" on the slice.

little not appealing but very nice looking, 8 is not really a ding,
ribs have a lot of sauce
pork is beautiful
brisket has specs of stuff all over them and burnt ends have a lot of sauce on them, cannot really see the meat

Looks good to me but curious now. Did the slices and pulled/chunks for the pork come from the same piece of meat?

Slices can from different piece of meat. There is pulled under the chunks and slices.

9 on chicken. Perfect!
9 on ribs
9 on pork
7 on brisket. (If therewasnt a sandy looking substance on the slices (I realize the au just needed to be strained and it wasn't sand...) it would be a 9.

Really nice!!

Quick look and I would give them:
chicken = 8 (overstuffed box - would have been a 9 with 6 thighs instead of 9)
ribs = 9 (I like to see the sides of the ribs too, but won't detract if I can't)
pork = 7 (WAY TOO MUCH SAUCE!!!)
brisket = 8 (would have been a 9 without the "grit")

My initial reaction was that there was TOO MUCH chicken in the box to look good. It's all about how the chicken looks, and when it looks like it is cramped/crowded/etc., is just looses a wee bit of appeal. THEREFORE I gave it an 8.

9s for chicken and brisket. 8s for ribs and pork- sauce did not look even. That being said I would love for mine looking that good

Ok... I did the breeze-by as I scrolled down through the pics, but here's my take (for what it's worth):

Chicken: 9
Beautiful color, nicely shaped, good glaze, fairly uniform. Absoutely delicious looking

Ribs: 7
Too dark and the sauce was a little gloppy. The cuts seemed a little uneven and I would put the "thumbnails" down as opposed to up.

Pork: 8
Very nice looking. The MM slices are pretty, but would have been a 9 if the piece had been a little more uniform in size. I know that's hard to do, but I've seen it and had the fortune to turn it in in the past, so I know it's possible. Also - and this just may be the picture, but I have to call it as I see it - the pulled chunks looked a little too dark for my taste and didn't really balance well from a presentation standpoint. They seemed like they were just sort of "tossed" into the front of the box.

Brisket: 8
Very nice slices, eventhough they'd been trimmed to fit the box. The only thing keeping it from a 9 was the presentation of the burnt ends. Run down the side like that, it almost looked like sauce had just been pooled on the parsley. I actually had to do a double-take to realize that they WERE burnt ends.

Like I said, that's just my opinion. I'm no CBJ, so take it with whatever grain of salt you want.:-D

I recall a "Rate this Box" pictorial that Barbefunkoramaque posted that lasted maybe 12 minutes. He cheated though, his penchant for Texas Style "no garnish" had many shots of Mindy Vega without garnish...

OK - here I am closing in on having judged 30 contests ( next will be 28 ) . . .

It's true that we have ten seconds - at most! - to judge appearance. You can ask for more if you need it . . . but most don't.

I personally LIKE more product in the box. It gives the impression of abundance and that the cook is not stingy at all, willing to share . . . all positive impressions.

After a ten second review . . .

I'd give it all 9's. The ONLY thing that would give me pause is, like others have said, the brisket could be shinier and smoother. Not necessarily BBQ saucier - just a little more shine on the slices - more juice. But I'd score them a 9 anyway - if I'm going back and forth, trying to decide between an 8 and a 9, I always decide in favor of the cook and score up.

Excellent appearance!

I have been trying to perfect the 9 in a box chicken over the last several contests and I always get really good appearance scores. Judges seem to like as much meat as possible in the box, and you won't get much more than 9 chicken thighs in a box.

But I have had problems with taste and texture. So for this contest...the same one Bigmista was in and placed 24th, I decided to go for 6 bigger and less uniform shaped thighs. My appearance scores took a bit of a hit, but I more than made up for it in taste and texture. I finished 8th in chicken which was my best showing in chicken yet. Helped me finish 3rd overall (chicken has pushed me back in the past, this time it propelled me forward). I made some other changes too, so it isn't all presentation, but cooking the small thighs well is "tough", so to speak.

Guess who will be giving up on the "pretty" looking 9 thighs in a box presentation?

Ok Neil, here goes:

Chicken - 9
Ribs - 9
Pork - 7/8 (oversauced)
Brisket - 8 (overcrowded & strain the au jus)

And now I'll go back & see what every one else says :-D.

Please remember that most boxes look better in person than in pix.
