Since I was finishing my degree, it had been quite a while since I just bummed around downtown Vancouver. Well, the degree is now done (as of this past weekend), so I decided to go walk around yesterday.

Since I was last downtown, we now have a whole bunch of new street vendors here (see http://vancouverstreeteats.ca/). One of those is The Re-Up BBQ truck (http://reupbbq.com/). I had a chance to shoot the bull with the owners (I presume) and have one of their pulled pork sandwiches. He also turned me on to sources for meat and wood (he will sell the hormone free meat they get from a local farmer at wholesale+10%, which may just make him my source for pork butt, as I haven't found any yet. Apparently, you can also get pecan chunks from Ace, but have to buy a case of it. I'm trying to track down a local Ace, but their website sucks).

The pork was deliciously juicy, the sauce was just sweet enough, and the smoke flavour was there without being overpowering. The bread was fresh, and the coleslaw was tasty. I highly recommend it.

I also told him about this place, so he'll hopefully drop in. If you're in Vancouver, give this cart a shot. He also told me there is now a new BBQ place in Steveston called the Hog Shack (http://www.hogshack.ca/) since Boonies (http://boonies.ca/) closed down, I wasn't aware that there was BBQ at all in the lower mainland (except for Memphis Blues, in which I was very disappointed the one time I went), so I'll have to try that place.

Thanks, Phil - never been to Canada. It's cold enough for me here in Kansas. Hah hah! I just looked using Re-UP's location map - it's almost exactly 2000 miles from here to there!

I think the Q would be cold by the time I got it home. :-) But thanks for the write up! Sounds excellent -

Thanks Phil for the heads up. I heard nothing but good things about re-up. Not able to travel downtown for a pulled pork sammie, kinda sucks. More info please on wholesale pork butt.

More info please on wholesale pork butt.

He just said to contact him at the address/phone number that is on their website. Haven't hit him up for any yet.

Is there anywhere else we can easily get pork butt in the lower mainland? I think my mother in law has a butcher in Steveston that can get brisket as well...

A source for spares better than Costco (they tend to butcher the tips off in a horrible manner) would be great too.

When and where, exactly? No idea there even was a casino in Langley, let alone one with some sort of BBQ event.

Nice. I knew about the September one, but missed it last year (this was just around the time I joined the forum, I think). I should definitely find a way to make it out there for the Casino one. Hopefully, I can meet some of the Brethren for the first time. Are these things open to the public for walking around?

Re: Pork butt, I just had a great day!

Went out to a local store that seems to have a nice dedicated butcher shop in the back (rest of the market caters mostly to the East Indian community, but they do have all kinds of stuff). As I looked at the meat display, saw a full boneless pork butt. Asked if they could get bone-in pork butt if I ordered it, and said he usually had them!

No idea what prices are usually like, but it's normally 3.something a pound, and he said I could have it for $2.99 pound if I take the whole thing and he doesn't have to touch it all (showed me where the gland is that I want to remove, and the rest of it looked good). Apparently, they usually stock these, and he can get me that price any time. Saturdays tend to be the best days, as they sometimes run out by Sunday-Monday. I didn't buy it because I don't have time for a butt tomorrow (might as well buy it fresh when I'm ready).

I know I checked for spares there before, and he usually only has baby backs, because no one apparently buys spares there.

If you're near North Delta/Surrey, the place is:

Tropical Farm Market & Meats Ltd.
11190 84Ave
Delta, BC
604-596-0280

I'll definitely be hitting it for my first pulled pork endeavour. I only stopped in because the Home Hardware next door often has good BBQ stuff. Picked up some K and some Pecan chips (still looking for a good source for chunks).

I believe there is a place in Langley called Britco (http://www.donaldsfinefoods.com/britcopork.php) that sells pork. Just sellect from the picture and they will email the price, since it changes daily or weekly.

I will look into it.

Phil-

The links that DivaQ provided are all sanctioned by the PNWBA, and I will say that BBQ on the Bypass at Well Seasoned is one hell of a fun event-Angie knows how to put it together and as a cook its fun to see the whole community come out and support it. Already registered for the Smoke on Wheels class! Become a Facebook friend of Well Seasoned and you'll be set!

I have heard nothing but good things about the Canadian Festival of Chili & BBQ, and I think in the past it has been held in Richmond or Vancouver BC, and this year it is in Langley. A group of dedicated cooks and judges have been keeping it going and I will be there to support it. We will be cooking as Smokin' Ty's and look for the biga$$ Klose pit and Red canopies.

Check out the PNWBA forum and Calendar, there are some new events in BC and take a road trip to Whistler or the other Western Provinces this summer and get your Q on! www.pnwba.com

We cooked some of the Britco Loin Back ribs, much smaller than we're used to in the states, but they were very meaty!

Brian,

Just deciding right now if I want to attend just the Competition Q class, or the "Smoke 'Em if you Got 'Em" class too. How basic is it going to be? I have most of the basics down, but never did injections. I already mix my own rubs and sauces, etc...

Also, was in Walmart two weeks ago (I place I usually avoid like the plague) and noticed they now have fresh produce and meat. They had two styles of spares, either already St-Louis cut or full with the tips still on. With tips on was about the same price as the Costco ones, but not destroyed like they are there (they tend to cut most of the tips off crooked but leave them partially on. They also tend to cut the racks themselves all kinds of crooked). I'll have to try them soon. The pork was from some place in Richmond.
