Hey all,

I have access to some pieces of poplar. Is it OK for smoking? I know I can test burn some but I'm wondering if someone has some experience with it.

I've discouraged from using it many times.

It's not a very poplar wood for cooking.

Pop your cherry if you want to try it.

I seem to recall that it's a good hard for fires but not real flavourful. I think one guy out of everyone I checked with has used it. Said it was mild like maple.

Hickory is mighty poplar, mesquite is way overrated and should not be as poplar IMHO.

Poplar is used in cabinet and furniture making as a "secondary" wood. It's used in non-prominent and hidden locations for stretchers, nailers and supports. The sapwood is green in color, the heartwood can be lighter green to white.
I've never used it in the smoker, but have burned it in a campfire and found it to have very little odor so would guess it to not have much flavor either.

The smoke from Poplar depends on the type of tree, Tuplip Poplar does not have a strong smoke but the Poplar that my parents had on their farm was nasty (I do not know what type it was). As always test first.
