View Full Version : Vending roasted corn

I was selling bbq concessions this weekend, had a farmer approach me about buying sweet corn. I was wondering if any of you sell roasted sweet corn on your smokers? Maybe have salt and squeeze butter on a table for it. I used to go to a state fair and they sold the dog snott out of it. What do you think? What do you sell it for if you do it? Any other thoughts?
Plus providing he is correct (and I'll check) he said it is 90% worm free.

My buddy vends roasted corn and makes a killing at it. $2.00 per ear, he did six events last year with an average of 250 ears per hour x 10 hours. Most people would walk up and buy 6 plus ears each visit due to the long lines.
He ran 3 charcoal grills with a crew of six college kids pumping product out. Pretty simple production, no soaking the corn, inspected prior to going on the charcoal grill, 20 minute cook time or until husk was black, pulled the husk back, swipe the silk off. Wrap the end with paper towel.
He uses a round stainless steel food holder with a plastic lid on top that has a slit cut thru, dunk the corn into the melted butter.
He had a couple of college girls who would assist customers sprinkling salt/pepper or seasoning as there hands would be to full holding ears of corn unable to do it them self.
Make sure to have lots of paper towels, handy wipes & tooth picks. The added customer service is well worth it.
With a pit, your gonna have to get the temps up pretty high to keep up with the demand.

I watched a booth two doors down at the rodeo
They did ok soaked in water then grill on gas grills until they started to burn
shuck, dunk and cha ching The booth operator (Rotary Club) said they paid too
much for the site and the corn
$4 a ear That seemed a tad high to me for a retail price
Everything costs to much here
Freakin gas will be $5 a gallon soon

I know a lot of bbq vendors that have roasted corn booths. I cooked corn for a lady last year at an event on my fec 750 and it was awesome. She made a killing. I am not sure about selling roasted corn with bbq only because you wont get the recognition for being a roasted corn guy.

buddy of mine pimps corn for a living. he's got a roaster on a trailer and lives on the road. great product. roasts it and tosses it into a cooler like we do butts. shucks to order and dips in whirl. then there's a ton of different stuff that the customers can shake on it. i think he's got a salt/pepper/whirl mix for those that want it. sells it at fairs and such, for anywhere from 3-6 an ear. also does smoked turkey legs and some other small stuff. helped him out a couple times.. good stuff.
