malaki, definitely. If you down far enough that a cakepan would fit over the bottom of the baffle and under the cooking grate, you'd have some help taming the hotspot and keeping temps a bit more even as well.

It'll definately help. Here's a picture of my baffle - I made it in a about and hour - including the trip to Lowe's. If I had it to do over (and may redo anyway) I'd make the piece in the firebox longer.

I put a foil pan of water under the edge and the pan extends on out into the cooking chamber. This picture is without the cooking grate installed.

You could do as Phil recommends and put a couple of inches of water into the bottom of the chamber -- just cork the drain hole!!

The best baffle I saw on a horizontal extended almost to the opposite side of the chamber, and was slotted for even heat distribution. Way cool.

No doubt about it! The more you can get that baffle to point at or below the grate the better chance you will get more even temps.

This is actually called tuning. On large cookers its done with plates spaced the length of the chamber. In small diameter cookers (under 24") heat radiated from the tuning plates can cause a "direct grilling effect" on the underside of the meat.

heres the tuning plate in my hondo.. it aint pretty bu it works. extends halfway across the chamber with holes in it increasing in size as they get farther from the heat. Also, if yours isnt designed like this, extend your smoke stand down to grate level or below using a can cut lenghtwise and the ends removed. Squeeze the can and slide it onto the chimnety, when you release it springs open to side and then you can slide it down.

there is a section in our files section under "mods" for horizontal smokers that tell you how to build 3 or four simple baffle/tuning plates. http://www.bandera-brethren.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index& req=getit&lid=102

Here's a no weld baffle I put on my CGSP. Only change is that I cut 2 slots 2" long, 1" deep (into the baffle main) and 3" from the firebox wall to help air flow. I may have the only CGSP that the CHIMNEY end is the hot end if the damper is open too much!

This is a picture of the baffle I installed. It is made out of 1/4" aluminum and is two plates 18 1/2" wide in a 20" wide smoke chamber. I slide the top plate towards the far end of the smoke chamber and have found a 3" opening seems to be the best for me, the picture shows it with a 2" opening. I have not experienced the direct grilling effect from the solid baffle, but boy, did the baffle make a big difference in the performance of my smoker. To help hold heat and smoke, I also made a chimney extension out of stainless steel. I found that the extension works best when it is about two inches above the grates. I haven't tried it all the way down to the grates, but will have to give that a try.

I will post all my mods in another area for that topic. Hope this helps with your search for the modifications you are considering.

Nope. Its 16 or 20ga steel...can't remember exactly. No welder's sickness there. Here's a view from the firebox that shows how it reduced/evened the opening by about 25% and, more importantly, increased the space between heat and grates by 3".
