There is also a blog on www.sheepsheadbites.com featuring commentary from during the day etc. The awards ceremony was delayed for a couple hours due to a computer glitch.
I do know that there were a couple of unfortunate dqs in the chefs choice category.
Brian and I of Ma's 'Que Crew got a call for 8th place ribs and walked for 4th place chicken and taking 6th place overall was a nice surprise. Julie et al took 3rd place chicken, 8th place beef and 3rd place chili if I remember correctly. My traditional Texas Red chili entry was completely eaten up but Brooklyn did not vote for it very much. I have no other results in chili at all. It was a brutally cold day (28 degrees in the early am and it might have warmed up to the mid to high 30's....) Still, it was nice to see lots of friends and other brethren folks and help get the rust off for the upcoming season. Look for individual scores etc maybe at the Nebs site soon. Brian has our copy.

We had to scratch our initial chef choice because they were Lump crabcake, NEBS woulndn't allow it, because the crab was already cooked. We had to go shopping for a whole new dish. luckily there were some local stores and we were able to throw together a 1st place dish

Good to see everybody in Brooklyn! Why the hell didn't I wear a jacket!? It was a long afternoon waiting for the glitches to get worked out, but the NEBS folks kept their heads together to get it all fixed and the rioting and looting were minimal.... :help:

Me too.

It is what it is. What we thought was a legal 160-180 point dish turned in to a last place dish. Fortunately my good friend Doug won GC, beating out some really stiff competition.

And to be clear to anyone who was there, Doug thanking me for getting DQ'd and making the victory possible was done entirely as a joke amongst old competition buddies.

I also learned that folding tables can fly pretty far when you're pissed. :)

It is what it is.

But the problem is none of us know what 'it is' is. Most of us were not there, so I would love for some to explain why you guys were DQ'ed. All I'm hearing is 'NEBS sucks.' And they're (NEBS) not saying anything either. So all we can do is assume and speculate.

I know Mike. I thought we were creating a dish that was 100 percent legal and could have easily changed it if I didn't think so.

True that. I have no reason to cheat or any desire. Any one who has seen me cook can validate the fact that I can do almost anything with smoke and flames, kind of like those weird people who can talk to horses.

Ask Bobo about the chicken sauce I made in 10 minutes Saturday after realizing we were going for a more Italian twist versus Asian. My wife made me write down the recipe that night after tasting it in case I ever decide to sell some products.

Apologies in the delay in getting the results out. Thanks for posting them. I havent had a chance to get online til now.
And, it looks as though I have to defend myself (and others) to people who werent even there, and werent involved. Thanks for that.

Two DQ's were for illegal entries- pre-cooked meat.
(crab cakes and lobster newburg)
One DQ was for missing turn-in.

NONE OF US EVER CALLED anyone a cheater.

Black and white, in the cooks packet and reiterated at the cooks meeting...
Contest entries must be raw and unseasoned at the time of inspection. Bacon, Prosciutto, Speck, Pancetta or Jamon for use in stuffing are the only exceptions to this rule.
Please remember that most crab meat has been cooked prior to purchase and as such is not allowed.

Thanks, Michelle, and I want to be clear that my only frustration is with myself and no one else. My understanding of the rules then and now are much different and having not been present for any discussions regarding the entry we were doing during inspection or otherwise I was only part of a team. That's why I let it go Saturday night and started plotting my epic bone breaking victory in 2012.

I would like to say that I respect the heck out of you and Andy for coming down every year and helping make GOTB successful and can't wait to see you all again soon. I'll leave the politics and rule dissection for everyone else.

You are 100% correct! We were never called cheaters, so this should be dropped immediately. Clint and I are the head cooks and we both agree we should have know the rules better. You and NEBS have done nothing wrong and I am so sorry that chatter amongst others has made it come to this. I hope this is the last we hear of this. We left before awards because we were cold and tired not because we were pissed. I went to say goodbye but you, Sandra and Andy were trying to figure things out so I didn't want to interrupt. Again I hope this is the end! Look forward to seeing you in Salisbury:becky:

As a member of Swamp Pit I understand the reasoning for the dq. We made a dish too similar to the original dish which upon inspection was disallowed. When given the chance to explain the entry as the NEBS officials came to our site we were unable to prove without a doubt that the ingredient was not the one they disallowed, according to the rules, at inspection. We were given ample opportunity to present our case and when all was said and done the REPS made their decision and I support that decision.

Congratulations to Grand Champs Doug and Laura
- Ribs Within!
and congratulations to Reserve Grand Champs
RxCellent Que!

I want to thank everyone for coming out to Sheepshead Bay.
Officials, teams, judges, table captains (YOURE THE BEST!) vendors, the media and spectators... we all helped to raise a bunch of money for the saint marks sports program, and that is a really good thing.

Another good thing is that I got to reconnect with many friends, and I got to meet a whole new bunch of great people.
This is one of the main reasons we got into BBQ. The friendships are worth more than the trophys.

Getting DQ'd SUCKS, I've been there and I've felt that pain.
Here's a different perspective... doing the DQ'ing SUCKS just as bad!
Not many of us think about the other side. I work hard to be the best competitor I can be, and I work just as hard to be the best Contest Official I can be.
Huge thanks have to go out to my right and left arms... NEBS Contest Officials Sandra Schmucki and Andy King. They worked every bit as hard as I did, and together we worked through the kinks.

To explain the delay in awards to everyone... the computer had a hiccup and we had to start all over and re-enter the entire contest from scratch, a fact we realized at about quarter of 4... almost award time.
Thanks to everyone for being patient while we madly typed, except those of you who started chanting "we want awards" ... you know who you are... :wink:
We did have an idea that you wanted results.

My last thank you of the day is to Robert Fernandez, Organizer of Grillin' On The Bay...
for putting this contest together and for staying the course with NEBS;
for promoting outdoor cooking and for encouraging and supporting new teams;
for working his a** off and for raising money for a worthy charity;

...for all this and more, through as MANY ups and downs as a Coney Island roller coaster, for 7 years. Keep up the good work Robert!

It was a blast, as always, and I'm already looking forward to next year.
