For Muzzlebrake (and others) -

By my count there are 14 sanctioned KCBS in NY if everyone either gets their paperwork cleared by the Board/ or is not B.S.ing me. The majority are in the competitive hotbed of Upstate.

The first 10 are listed @ http://empirestatebbqchampionship.com/
- These include the greats like Roc City over Memorial Day weekend, Boston Hill, ILBBQF & Oink; mostly organized by competitors & true BBQ lovers.

The other 4 are apparently being put together by promotional groups.

Father's Day weekend in Syracuse they are having what they are calling the "American BBQ Championships". Back to back 4 category KCBS comps on Saturday and Sunday. The site is http://www.smokeonthewatersyracuse.com/American-BBQ-Championships.html

The organizer says he has KCBS sanctioning but nothing is currently listed on the KCBS site, nor do they have applications up. This is the same weekend as a comp in Wilson, NY.

Then there are the 2 Arlie Bragg events being billed as the National BBQ Championship Series the last two weekends in July, first in Buffalo and then in Albany. These are listed at the KCBS site but no reps are attached and I have not been able to find any websites or other info for these. The last weekend in July there will again be multiple KCBS comps within hours of each other.

14 comps, 2 weekends with simultaneous events and one weekend with 2 events at the same location; the American BBQ Championship and the National BBQ Championship series (wonder what the Jack and the Royal think about that). Got it?

You could start in June, cook pretty much every weekend into mid-August and never leave the state. And it sounds as though the majority are also "State Championships".

Add in one more with Honcho's Regional Best of the Best qualifier over Buffalo way, I believe, and that brings your total to 15.

I better hit up my sponsors.

All I know is I'm starting at Roc City.

im rephrasing my post..

Aslo part of the ESBC is Battle of the BBQ Brethren....a 5th year, KCBS sanctioned event with previous prize pools of $9,000-10,000K and sponsored by the Police Athletic League as well as a fundraiser for special needs children, and I think i know the organizers staff pretty well as all competitors and BBQ Lovers.:boxing: we may not be in the upstate hotbed, but we have matured to a great contest at a great venue.

I should have of course mentioned this event as well as one of the tops. An oversight on my part Grand Poobah. Of the 14-15 comps we have in the state I would say that half of them are among the best in the country in terms of how they treat the teams. We will have to wait and see how all the comps new to the circuit measure up to the more established, well-run events.

thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. It looks like its shaping up to be one hell of a year in NY!

So correct me if I'm wrong but the calender should look something like this;

Empire State Championship Series;

4/16-17 Williepalooza, Brentwood
5/28-29 ROC City Ribfest, Rochester
6/19-20 Cross Border Blues, Brews & Q, Wilson
6/24-26 Boston Hills BBQ Festival
7/1-3 ILBBQF,Lake Placid
7/17-18 Troy Pig Out
7/30-31 Brockport BBQ & Music
8/6-7 BOTB, Holtsville
8/20-21 Hudson Valley Ribfest, New Paltz
9/23-25 Oinktoberfest, Clarence
All the above are KCBS with the exception of Willie Palooza (gets a shout out for the best judging criteria which inculdes, Palatableness and Visual Aesthetic). I think all of these are "State Championships" for purposes of Royal and Jack draws

7/15-16 Old Falls Street Ribfest, Niagra Falls
8/12-14 Smoking Eagles International BBQ Festival, ? ( In think its in Niagra Falls too, couldnt find an address omn the website)
Not sure about the Ribfest, but the other, I believe is a qualifier for the Best of the Best competition

Possibles that are still being put together;

6/18-19 American BBQ Championships, Syracuse (not listed on KCBS calender, no information or applications available from website)
7/23-24 National BBQ Championship, Buffalo
7/30-31 National BBQ Championship, Albany
( both of these are listed on the KCBS site without reps. No website or additional infomation)

Add Grillin on the Bay, 3/26 to that list and it sure looks like there is plenty to keep the NY comp cook busy

Hey,

Just wanted to let eveyone know who was following this thread a few weeks ago that we found out on Friday that KCBS has sanctioned our contest. So the Crossborder Blues, Brews, and Que contest is a go for Father's Day weekend in Wilson, NY. I'm going to post a proper Contest Announcement right now in a minute.

8/5-6 Taste of Country National BBQ Championship, Buffalo

The contest in Buffalo switched weekends it is now the same weekend as the Brethren Battle. At least there isn't 2 contests an hour away from each other on the same weekend.

Apparently there are 10 contests run by a country radio affiliate, they have these ten contests, then a final contest that you qualify for...anyway just wanted everyone to know that the contest moved

That is kind of vague.........

This is the contest that Arlie Bragg is organizing? I emailed for information more than once and have never gotten an answer. His site looks like its up but the links to the contest pages aren't working (at least they didnt for me). The dates KCBS has listed in Buffalo and Albany don't have a location listed on Arlie's site either.

Whats this radio station thing, are they are doing this during the current season? Is there anymore info available?

I haven't found anything either. Isn't Bragg a KCBS board member? Isn't that kind of a conflict of interest to have him putting together comps and being able to choose and change dates at will that directly conflict/compete with other established events?

Regardless, I know what 4 I am going to compete in to qualify for the ESBCS: they all are firmly scheduled and have been so for some time, have easily accessible and knowledgeable organizers, have applications posted (it's almost April, how do you not have an app up yet?) and look to be first and foremost competitor friendly rather than simply concerned with how many bucks they can squeeze out of teams and attendees.

New contest in Plattsburg also, think D has been working with them on this one. 7/8-7/10 I think

I don't know if he is or not to be honest. I do know he has a reputation for organizing contests with high payouts. i was hoping that the one in Albany would give me an excuse to not have to drive on Long Island until hopefully September.........:becky:but it looks like its turning out to be a Shake & Bake deal. Guess I'm going to be stuck in traffic......:evil:

I just saw that on the KCBS site, wasn't listed when I put together that list. I wish them luck with that one, not sure who they plan to draw to Plattsburg a week after Lake Placid.

This is all I know about the Taste of Country Championships:

I talked to Artie on the phone a few days ago. Apparently the contests are contracted by a radio station owner, one for each of their markets. Artie said he moved the contest from one date to the next to try to fit in a contest at the Casinos in Atlantic City. He said the Atlantic City thing wasn't final yet. Whether that happens or not I think the date is firm on the Buffalo contest. The application should be up in the next week or so...

It doesn't sound as though the Artie events will be part of the ESBC, correct?

I thought I tried to include the Plattsburgh comp in my original count but I may have missed it, I've lost track at this point.

Don't forget there's a guy in Syracuse saying he is doing a weekend with back-to-back comps that are already, supposedly, KCBS sanctioned.
