Hey all,

I want to say thanks to Chris from IQue www.iquebarbecue.com (http://www.iquebarbecue.com) / Great Lakes BBQ Supply www.greatlakesbbqsupply.com (http://www.greatlakesbbqsupply.com) & BBQ Mag Online www.bbqmagonline.com (http://www.bbqmagonline.com) for coming up with this great idea!

Chris & I have decided to start a Sams BBQ Madness Tournament where I...the Mel Kiper Jr. of BBQ, the BBQ Swami from another Mommy seed out each location in each region and we have a FANTASY BBQ PICK'EM.

We can't accept money, as that would be illegal, so maybe we could get a few very nice people who are involved with this website to fund a prize pool.

Here is how it would work:

I will seed out all 30 teams for each location. The #1 seed (percieved strongest team) is worth 1 point, #2 seed worth 2 points...all the way down to the #30 seed (dark horse, long shot, rainmaker, hail mary, cold day in hell team) worth 30 points. Obviously, a former World Champion would be seeded higher than a team competing in their first event. However, if you get a long shot to pay off...you could dominate. Pick yourself and cook your butt off and who knows.

You would get 10 picks per location (20 locations total...I think) and whomever has the most points wins a prize. If you want to participate, but aren't sure who to pick...just follow my picks straight down the line. 98.4% of the time I'm right.

After the regionals have been decided...we will reseed the teams and you all have a clean slate. Just so everybody can stay in this...after the local events are done and we have our winner. We will fire it back up again and do the same thing with the Five Regional Finals. Same thing...you pick 10 teams, but the points double.

After that we will take it down to the Nationals. Same thing...you pick 10 teams, but the points triple.

The payouts are as follows:
Win the local portion (highest score for local events only): wins a prize
Win the Regional portion (highest score for regionals only): wins a prize
Win the Nationals portion (highest score for nationals only): wins a prize
Have the highest total points combined through all 3 stages: wins a prize

You have to be involved in each of the 3 rounds to be eligible for the final prize.

Is there an interest? Anybody feeling Charitable out there?

The BBQ community has all eyes on this contest. You've got the best from the west vs. Iowa Smokey D's. Never has a man had to carry such a heavy load out west then in this epic battle.

"If it wasn't for the west...bbq cooks wouldn't have to wear a vest around their chest"

Bigmista...I had dinner with you and Jimmy, Phil, Chad, Mike, Bill & Ted at the Royal. With that being said...here we go! The west has the judges trained to eat the sweet meat, but Smokey D's pulls in a RGC.

Im just a little confused ( I know thats nothing new).

Are teams going to be reseeded after each round? Does "after the regionals have been decided" mean after the local contests or the outcome of the region contest?

goodbuddiesbbq
02-13-2011, 03:09 PM
So...I will try and plug away on the seeding...they are not all done yet and I have to go back and have the COMPUTER re-seed all of the teams.

Yes, you can be involved in this competition and participate in the brackets.

I will try and PM all of you tonight, but here is what we've got so far:

Kosmos Q: Giving a Comp Injection package worth over $70...unless, you win...then it becomes priceless.
Great Lakes BBQ Supply: Stepping up $100 gift certificate towards all of their fine products.
Plowboys / Smoke on Wheels: Willing to donate some product and/or discounted spots at a cook class. This stuff gets serious results...nationwide! I missed the class in Michigan (I called day before) and am regretful of that, but with my accurate assessment of these things...I may be going for a discounted rate when I win.
Burnt by the Best / Bentley: Considering putting a Green Mountain Grill. I actually cook exclusively on them and we've never had so much success. You just set it...and forget it! I will PM you tonight...Thanks!
Whiskey Bent BBQ: Chad is out of control and will put you in his all inclusive Competition BBQ Boot Camp in Florida...including food, shelter, beer, real world cooking class, shirts...and you walk with all the trophies of the day (if there are any). Disclaimer: You do not take the prize money and pay for your flight!
www.bbqmagonline.com (http://www.bbqmagonline.com) : Brian is going to give a free subscription to all that participate and is considering what else he can do to sweeten the deal. Exciting stuff there for an up and coming bbq enthusiast!
Kebroak Charcoal: Is willing to donate charcoal....details to follow. When we roll out the Stumps (waiting on reply)...we use Kebroak Lump...perfect pieces. If only it were cheaper to freight charcoal.
"Unnamed BBQ Sauce & Rub Co." is going to donate. This stuff is magic and has produced a Top 10 Overall Finish at the 2010 Jack (its first time being used), including a monster call in Ribs. In its first true competition run in Plant City, Florida it missed Grand Champion by 1 uncut rib (true story - ouch). 2nd comp...used by two teams in Florida at Lakeland Pigfest...it received 7 out of 10 possible calls (this includes overall). They are a bit hesitant, but I will strong arm (Old Kimbo Slice-style). I am 5'10" & 200 lbs and open all of the 2 Liter bottles at my house...who could stop me?

Keep it coming.

The plan currently is as follows...Chris from IQue is going to ask a couple questions about rule changes, to see which plan you all like most and I will continue getting the seeding right. Our hopes are to have a form that we will post and this can/will all be done electronically. MY COMPUTER IS THAT SMART 97.5% ACCURATE!

Stay motivated...the short answer to all of the other 68 posts is....YES, we will do this for other events as well, but this one may be the only one that picks up some product help from all the good folks on this site!

Oh yeah...if you know of an unknown team that has been taking cooking classes...sell them out on this site so that the information can be put into our database.

If you know anybody willing to help the cause...send them in.

Stay Tuned!

goodbuddiesbbq

Here's how it will work:

I will seed each of the 20 local competitions and assign each team a ranking 1-30. You will select the same amount of teams from each local competition that you think will advance to the Regionals. Additionally, if you select the winner as one of your picks and you will get a 3 point bonus in the Local Competition Round.

Example: Local Competition - Gilbert, AZ:

With your 1st pick you select Rhythm N' Que (1 Seed) and they advance...you will get 1 point.
With your next pick you select Big Mista (6 seed) and they advance...you will get 6 points.
Next, you take Sodbusters BBQ (30 seed) and they don't advance...you get 0 points.
Next, you take BBQThom.com (7 seed) and they don't advance...you get 0 points.
Next, you take Slap Yo Daddy (4 seed) and they advance...you get 4 points. Next, you take McFrankenboo (5 seed) and they advance...you get 5 points. Finally, you take Iowa Smokey D's (2 seed) and they advance...and win you get 2 points + 3 points (winner bonus).

Therefore, for Region 1: Gilbert, AZ you would have scored 21 points. We will take your scores from all 20 local competitions and add them up. The top 3 highest scores combined from all 20 local competitions will win a prize (to be determined later).

Region 1: You will select 7 teams from each location.
(Gilbert, AZ; Sacramento, CA; Santa Fe, CA; Loveland, CO)
Region 2: You will select 7 teams from each location.
(Austin, TX; Conroe, TX; Overland Park, KS; Midwest City, OK)
Region 3: You will select 6 teams from each location.
(Baton Rouge, LA; Memphis, TN; Birmingham, AL; Marietta, GA; Orlando, FL)
Region 4: You will select 7 teams from each location.
(Evergreen Park, IL; Traverse City, MI; Madison, WI; Woodbury, MN)
Region 5: You will select 10 teams from each location.
(Greensboro, NC; Chesapeake, VA; Pittsburgh, PA)

After the Regional Competions have been determined, we will re-rank all of the teams that have moved on 1-30 for each region. You will select the 10 teams from each region (as listed below) that you think will move on to the Nationals. All of the points in this round will be doubled. The winner bonus for each Region will be a 6 point bonus in this round. We will reward prizes for the top 3 highest scores in this round.

Side Note: We will keep all scores from all 3 rounds to determine our overall winner. However, even if you were in dead last from the 1st round...you can still be the high scorer in the Regional round or National round and win prizes.

Region 1: Las Vegas, NV
Region 2: Fort Worth, TX
Region 3: Jackson, TN
Region 4: Indianapolis, IN
Region 5: Medford, NY

After the National Competion has been determined, we will re-rank all of the teams that have moved on 1-50. You will select the 10 teams that you think will finish in the top 10. If your selections make the Top 10 you will be scored as follows (points are tripled):

1st place - 10 points x 3 + 9 points (winner bonus x 3) = 39 points
2nd place - 9 points x 3 = 27 points
3rd place - 8 points x 3 = 24 points
down through 10th place
10th place - 1 point x 3 = 3 points

We will reward prizes for the top 3 highest scores in this round.

Finally, the highest scorer when all 3 rounds (local, regional & national) are added together will win our grand prize (to be named later).

Confused...or does that make sense?

goodbuddiesbbq
02-13-2011, 10:33 PM
I do not want to have to manually add all of these scores up. I have a meeting tomorrow with my "Computer" to see if we can program a simpler way than manual.

I agree...with the prizes that are coming in...it should be some really nice payouts.

Butcher BBQ has agreed payout to each of the Regional winners (Top 3).

It may actually get to the point where we are stacking some prizes...but don't let that hold you back from donating.

I'll let you all know my findings tomorrow for a ranking system.

I smell the good ole fashion excel doc getting sent out.

An excel spreadsheet would probably be the easiest. Then you could copy and paste individuals sheets into a master and it would do the math. (once the master was set up)

It is really going to be focusing on how you can personally consume a 1.75 liter of the whiskey of your choice, not get thrown out for quiet times infractions and manage to make all turn in times and have a fighting chance at the awards.

I will also cover how you personalize $10 bills to Jimmy Brod (smokin' cracker) after he whips our ass at chicken and/or brisket. I am very experienced when it comes to that.

Either way you slice it, it will be a good time.

I need a spreadsheet just to keep up with the prizes.

You win something...just for participating and then you can some amazing stuff.

Worse case...if you don't like any of the products...you can take it all in a SERVICE MERCHANDISE GIFT CERTIFICATE, just like the old Wheel of Fortune when they made you spend your money after each round.

And yeah...I would love to take a pound of the Jacked Up rub and analyze it for our database before some lucky person wins it.

Last but not least...I think Excel is going to be the play...I will work on this the next few days and hopefully most, if not all of the locations will be full by then.

All donations are appreciated.

20 questions with a World Champion

How about it Chris (Ique), Scottie (Cancersuckschicago.com), Rub (Swamp Boys) or any others out there!

You donate the opportunity for a lucky person to ask you 20 questions via the BBQ Brethren Hotline aka your cell phone. They will try and be as honest as possible, but you only get to ask 20 questions.

For Example:
1. What sauce do you use for Pork?
2. Do you use a slather on any of your categories before applying rub?
3. What rub do you use for Ribs?

Just as a test run...if the three of you would answer these questions so that the lucky guests at home can understand what they win?:-D:-D:-D

Here's how it will work:

I will seed each of the 20 local competitions and assign each team a ranking 1-30. You will select the same amount of teams from each local competition that you think will advance to the Regionals. Additionally, if you select the winner as one of your picks and you will get a 3 point bonus in the Local Competition Round.
...

Confused...or does that make sense?

This one actually crashed the CB4 Super Main Frame computer. It is unable to process data under a 90% accuracy rating and crashed. Luckily, I hooked it up to one of Pelletheads.com Green Mountain Grills (PM Me, please) and it produced enough power to give you a 95.5% accuracy rating.

First, let me say that I am currently having a romantic dinner with my wife aboard Smokey D's G6 as he is mixing us cocktails and singing like Dean Martin...this guy is top flight. Why she sneaks away for a moment before we land in Paris for brunch...I bring you the teams for the 2011 Jack Daniels...I mean the Region 2: Midwest City, OK.

Good Lord! When you see these names, you'll understand why the "worlds second most powerful computer" behind only NASA's...almost blue screened.

This is actually a severe medical condition that is going around.

It's called Tuffinitis

Tuffinitis: A virus that makes you take total disregard for how long it takes to turn in a box.

If a video surfaces of you busting into a large closet and staring down a KCBS rep and begging...I'll never let you live it down. Even if you can actually get the box in the bread tray in less than 7 attempts. That was the funniest part of the video (put in here, no down here, no turn it, the other way)...Gold! As a matter of fact...you have reminded me to send Tuffy his video clip from Pigfest...it's been a couple of weeks.

As one of the stronger handicappers in the FBA, I will tell you that the "BBQ Swami" has some serious skills. He is a member of our team but now that he is up north, we only get to cook together about 3-4 times a year.

When we cook together, the tradition is for us to make a drink after turn in's, grab the microphone in our tent and start setting the odds for awards. I have never seen this guy hit at less than 90% and walk away without a pocket full of money. He did all this without the power of the computer bank that he has set up now.

Maybe the guy has too much time on his hands but who am I to judge, he is just that damn good. I would definitely say to participate in this at your own risk because this guy is shark, he knows his BBQ.

I'm not only talking contest results but rubs, sauces, cook classes, injections, etc. We have been able to take his analysis and our participation in Rub's cooking class to cut down our learning curve significantly.

At the end of the day, whether you like him or hate him, he is one of the funniest guys to sit down and split a case of Natty Light with!

As for Natty Light...that's not me...ever...never once!

As mentioned...Smokey D and I, G6 to and from comps and sip only the finest wines and trappist ales...we are inseperable. As for the 90% accuracy...that was before the computer.

Maybe as part of the prize pool, I'll tell you one of our many stories we've accumulated along the way:
1. The only way to win your first Grand Championship (Fake a TV Show)
2. Missing turn-ins in Wauchula because half your team was less than desirable before the cooks meeting. (Side note: Don't have a contest in the parking lot of a police station and call the event - dry!)
3. Attempting to purchase a lot of bbq product from one of my BBQ Heroes and somehow it ending with me receiving multiple death threats (not from him...he's still a hero of mine and I've never met him). Good deeds never go unpunished. NO NAMES PLEASE!!!
4. Post as your brother on this forum and get him cussed out by an older lady in front of all of your friends and family @ Pigfrest (Classic). His face...when he had no idea what was going on...priceless.

I'll see some of you guys in a few weeks at a warm up. We can discuss our picks at that time. I suspect that the team in the 24 spot might do a bit better than the TPX2400 believes as it may not speak Texican very well, if at all.

I'm flattered by my ranking but cooking in Texas against a bunch of damn good cooks from Texas and elsewhere may prove a major hurdle.

Just saying, since my wife and I are certified judges, we'll probably sign up to judge in Ft. Worth if we want to be there.

It is with 96.1% accuracy that the PS3XBOX2900 Super Computer has returned its findings for Evergreen, IL. Although, it has a couple of big hitters...it is mostly loaded with teams that are looking for a long awaited return to the GC stage or a first GC. I have to admit the first time that we analyzed...it did throw Captain Ron as GC. There was one glaring problem with that...Able Acres and 4 Smokin Butts were not added at that time.

With that being said...here is exactly how this one is going to play out. Also, my arch nemesis (Hoosier Crawdaddy)...he beat me for Ohio Team of the Year 2010 qualifies and inches closer to my meeting him again reuninion. I bet he had no idea that I had him on my radar all this time.

I bet he sleeps well at night, too.

Are these the final rankings or will they be updated as we get closer?

I was wondering the same thing. Our team will have 4 comps before evergreen park.

I have fired up my TRS80 Color Computer (CoCo), got the 8" floppies ready to go, submitted the FORTRAN program deck to the computer lab and they put it through the IBM 082 card sorter and have certified it error free and transfered it to 5 track punch tape. All I need now is the Lotus spread sheet from GoodbuddiesBBQ to make my guaranteed picks. Couldn't get the 6250GCR tape decks working, there is "crap in the Gap" and they need to be defluxed (edited by WordStar)

I like the first run better :-D But adding 4 Smokin' Butts and Able Acres dropped us to 8th? That don't make sense :-D

So...with the two teams that were added:

1. The computer looks at your strengths (chicken, ribs, pork, brisket)
2. The computer looks at your competitors strengths
3. The computer looks at you past competitions
4. The computer looks at how many comps you have done in a "period"
5. The computer looks at your "upside" have you won...how many times?
6. The computer looks at recent streaks
7. The computer looks at regional performances: From California and cooking in Indiana...you might get surprised.
8. Random generators: What table do you hit & what category

Let, me talk about #8...this is where you lost it Ron. When those guys joined it started to push you down in categories where you could potentially be the best at the table. They change the scope to where if you hit their tables in your "strong" categories, the computer thinks they would be up for the challenge. In short, that would put you at 2nd best (potentially) at the judges table in your best categories. That's why it threw you so far back.

Sometimes the computer is too smart...and the turtle thing as well!:-D

At the end of the day, whether you like him or hate him, he is one of the funniest guys to sit down and split a case of Natty Light with!

love me some Natty Light!

I want a piece of this and am in. My prediction is that 4 of the the finalists in Bentonville will be from the Gilbert Bracket. They might like it sweet but there are a lot of good teams in this one.

Are these the final rankings or will they be updated as we get closer?

When we are two weeks out...I will resend a final updated list.

This is probably best because some of these events are six months away still. A lot can change in six months.

Let these serve as a preliminary and we will lock two weeks out and update. Please send any useful information you have about some teams (i.e. an former team member that is now competing as thier own team, but has never cooked a comp solo yet).

Read the rules...this is how the finals of the "Other Pick em'" will work.

If you don't know about a team...I'll try and give some stuff to introduce them a bit.

Just so we can start to work out the kinks...here is this weeks FBA event in Haines City, FL. It is with 98.4% accuracy that I report the power poll for this upcoming Jack Qualifier in Haines City, FL. A few of the big dogs from FBA comps will not be here for this one, so anybody can truly win (kind of).

For this one...lets do this...you pick 10 teams that you think will make the top 10 overall. Just pick teams that you think will make the top 10 in the order that you think they will finish.

1st place = 10 points
10th place = 1 point

If one of your picks wins you get a 3 bonus points.

No prizes...just a trial run...unless somebody wants to put up a "small prize".

For this one, just post your top 10 on this thread
1. Smokin' Cracker BBQ Team: Helped cook a GC last week...brisket is on fire!
2. Whiskey Bent BBQ: Could have won last two events if chicken hit a good table
3. Big Papa's Country Kitchen: Last weeks RGC and 2010 FBA Team of the Year
4. Unknown BBQ: Always a contender and the Winter Haven hangover is gone.
5. Git R Smoked: Very solid. One of the best chicken cooks in the world.
6. Uncle Kenny's: If the judges like his sauce this weekend...it's on!
7. Smoke Shack: Not sure if this is the right smoke shack...if it is...they could make noise.
8. Florida Boys : This team has finally got it figured out and have won two GC's in 6 months.
9. Great Lake BBQ & Feed Co.: Did you take Butchers/Plowboys class in Michigan?
10. Blitzkrieg BBQ: Up and coming...watch out for these boys in brisket.
11. Hot Wachulas: Ribs on...can he get the other categories to catch up?
12. Eb's Pit Stop BBQ: Seasoned pro..can hit high and low.
13. Pig In Or Pig Out: Similar to Eb's...they can get a call or two and make some noise.
14. Fatt Ashes: First pro comp...however, beat the biggest backyard field @ 2011 Pigfest
15. Porkin Aint Easy: A great backyard team that is still figuring it out. They'll get a call.
16. Boca BBQ: Hot and cold...Boca could be a top 10 or a 25th overall team.
17. Accutech BBQ: Potential for a call
18. Justice Smokers: Potential for a call
19. Pops Que: Pops is pops. He may get a call...but 10th place is his ceiling.
20. Second Star BBQ: Potential for a call
21. Q Crew
22. Cowboy Cuisine BBQ
23. Blue Ribbon Smokers
24. Lawhorn's Signature Seasonings
25. Whos Cooking BBQ
26. No Secrets Bar B Que
27. United Pork Smokers
28. Hog Jims
29. Bar-B-Que This
30. PJs BBQ

34. Smokin N the boys room
35. Oink 2 Tail
36. ShantyTown BBQ
37. Zoo-wee Mama

One suggestion. Is there a way to get the ranking involved? That is what makes brackets the most fun in my opinion is getting extra points when you can pick a dark horse. I mean anyone can pick Cracker to win. How about instead of 10 pts for 1st place etc... You get the Rank Number for the teams that come in the top ten.

If Cracker is in the top 10 you get 1 point

If Florida Boys are in the top 10 you get 8 points

If a selected team wins GC you get bonus (3 x rank)

So if Florida Boys win GC you would get a bonus of (3x8 = 24)

Read the rules...this is how the finals of the "Other Pick em'" will work.

If you don't know about a team...I'll try and give some stuff to introduce them a bit.

My best guess, being that I have finished a 1st looser 3rd overall 4 out of my last 6 contests...I'm going to go with the mojo.

1. Unknown (Creeping in and out all depends on the bev consumption)
2. Big Papa (A stud! we can only hope his old lady will get him distracted)
3. Smokin Crack (3rd place wonder muffin)
4. Whisky Bent (Chicken will be walking for sure)
5. FL Boys (Old Farts with a new lease on life watch out)
6. Get R Smoked (The ultimate suck-up has about got it figured out again)
7. Great Lake BBQ (Someone un-plug this guys cooker please cause he’s a walkin)
8. Hot Wauchula (one man show let it rip in Winter Haven wauchula out)
9. Uncle Kenny (I just hope someone pisses in his cool-aid and gets him riled up)
10. Pops Que (If he’s on the Viagra this weekend we are all in trouble)

Should this be a separate thread?

1. Git R Smoked - won it last year, goes to bed by 8pm, how can he lose?
2. Smokin' Cracker - RIGHT behind GRS, less than a point
3. Unknown BBQ - Papa Clark will carry them with chicken
4. Whiskey Bent BBQ - Big party Fri. night, Dan saves the day
5. Big Papa's Country Kitchen - Dana still has a RGC hangover
6. Uncle Kenny's - the sauce is the boss
7. Great Lake BBQ & Feed Co - Ford is dialing in the FBA
8. Florida Boys - Still scoring TOTY points
9. Accutech BBQ - Q School Grads are going places
10. Hot Wachula - If he can show up on time, look out

Correct...If you pick Whiskey Bent (2 seed) to come in the top 10, you get 2 points. If you rank them as GC...you get 2x3 for a total of six. Chris has the right idea...If you pick Accutech to walk and they get a call...you get their rank as points (I think they were 17th or 17 points).

If you actually get the Grand Champ right...you get 3 x their rank
If you actually get the Reserve Grand Champ right...you get 2 x their rank

That should separate it out.

Does that sound better?

The Swami's brother gets the 10 day contract. Will Chad kill him by the end of the weekend or did they just sign a great new addition.

Here's mine:

1. Whiskey Bent BBQ: Could have won last two events if chicken hit a good table
2. Big Papa's Country Kitchen: Last weeks RGC and 2010 FBA Team of the Year
3. Smokin' Cracker BBQ Team: Helped cook a GC last week...brisket is on fire!
4. Florida Boys : This team has finally got it figured out and have won two GC's in 6 months.
5. Great Lake BBQ & Feed Co.: Did you take Butchers/Plowboys class in Michigan?
6. Hot Wachulas: Ribs on...can he get the other categories to catch up?
7. Uncle Kenny's: If the judges like his sauce this weekend...it's on!
8. Smoke Shack: Not sure if this is the right smoke shack...if it is...they could make noise.
9. Git R Smoked: Very solid. One of the best chicken cooks in the world.
10. Unknown BBQ: Always a contender and the Winter Haven hangover is gone.

I like the way you are thinking!

or call them

863-221-8144 and ask for last second trends.

Here's a hot tip that I just got from them: Whiskey Bent is courting a new team member this weekend, but two team members (prep & presentation man Jared "The Dealer" Hatcher and Temperature, taste, presentation, & general disregarder of time man - The BBQ Swami will not be there).

The Swami's brother gets the 10 day contract. Will Chad kill him by the end of the weekend or did they just sign a great new addition.

Negative on the 10 day contract with The Swami's brother. It is a 48 hour contract. If he doesn't pan out, Rub will have a new dishwasher for his next comp. Sorry Woody!

Any cook who doesn't pick themselves first is just plain lying. So having said that I just hope the recent nuptials won't mess up my game too much. I also think we'll have a top 10 upset just don't know the other teams well enough yet to handicap them.

1. Great Lake BBQ & Feed Co.: Did you take Butchers/Plowboys class in Michigan? Nope - been here in FL all the time. I'm a Davis/Trigg/Grey/Lampe/Kirk/Rice graduate anyway.
2. Big Papa's Country Kitchen: Last weeks RGC and 2010 FBA Team of the Year
3. Smokin' Cracker BBQ Team: Helped cook a GC last week...brisket is on fire!

9. Eb's Pit Stop BBQ: Seasoned pro..can hit high and low.
10. Pig In Or Pig Out: Similar to Eb's...they can get a call or two and make some noise.

OK... I went old school for this one. I have consulted the Farmer's Almanac, studied the Wooly Worm Caterpillar and the migration patterns of the Yellow Perch in Lake Michigan and have come up with the following...

1. Big Papa's Country Kitchen: So close last week. They want it bad.
2. Smokin' Cracker BBQ Team: Jimmy is a good cook, and he's going to make this one very close.
3. Unknown BBQ: These guys are just Unknown to me :-D
4. Whiskey Bent BBQ: Having a new team member may cause some confusion
5. Git R Smoked: The Wooly Worms predicted a first place in Chicken
6. Great Lake BBQ & Feed Co.: A Northern boy moving up in the ranks in Florida
7. Smoke Shack: Smoke Shack or Love Shack?
8. Florida Boys : Just a SWAG :-D
9. Hot Wachulas: I just like the name.
10. Fatt Ashes: The new guys get their first top 10.

Please note: No Wooly Worms or Yellow Perch were harmed in the making of this list.

Based upon the current 25 entries into Loveland, CO here is my projected top 10...

1 Pellet Envy (Perennial TOY contender)
2 Burnin' Bobs Butts n Bones (3 GCs in 18 comps in 2010)
3 The Smoking Hills (Strong performer all of 2010)
4 Smoke N the Rockies (RGC in Loveland last year)
5 R & R BBQ (Top 5 in 5 of last 6 events)
6 2 Lil Macs (5 comps total including the Jack under his belt)
7 Chibi-Q (Two 3rd place finishes in big events last year)
8 Wild Hogs BBQ (Easily could finish better, tough to predict)
9 Mean Dean's Smoking Machine (3rd out of 65 in Frisco, CO last year)
10 GQue (Newer team, Pellet Envy Protégé)

2 Lil Macs could be a sleeper and take the whole thing. He's only competed 5 times, and made it to the Jack last year. He has a GC, plus RGC in his first 5 comps, and finished 12th at Winter Q last week. Chibi-Q could be a sleeper pick too. He came on strong last year, and this contest is in his backyard. R & R also finished strong last year, finishing in the Top 5 in five out of their last six contests. Tough one to call, and obviously I have to give the edge to Pellet Envy. However, anyone of these top 10 could walk away with a GC depending upon how they cook that day. GQue is new, but took a Pellet Envy class mid-year in 2010. After that, he had two top 10 finishes to close out the year.

Enjoy! ...and good luck to all the teams competing! :thumb:

Picking the GC could be worth an extra 10 points and RGC an extra 5. Over the course of 20 events this would cause some separation. I also think going back to your original points system of the seeding of the team is the amount of points you earn (14th seed makes top 10 = 14pts) would make a big difference as well.

4. Whisky Bent (Chicken will be walking for sure)

It appears that all of the events are going to fill up today...the lone exception being possibly New Mexico. Give me a couple of days to compile these and I will lay it out by region (1-30).

Let the first draft serve as a rough copy until we get within 7 days out of the event and I'll update it so that we can put out our predictions.

Good luck...just as a test run...I am going to try and do the KCBS event this week in Arizona.

If there is anybody that is interested...this one should be spread out a bit more as there are a lot more teams.

Get the old computer fired up and and see how it fairs for Lake Havasu this weekend.

No donations for this one...but probably good practice for the Sams Event.

Top 10 picks only

This one is a huge field with a few of the very heavy hitters, a couple of teams that can make some noise & a few teams that are on the verge of taking down their first ever championship.

With a field of 83 teams...i'm predicting a big dog will win...but do not be surprised to see a few "who the hell's" mixed in those names. There is some real value after the top 5 teams.

3 x points if you hit the winner
2 x points if you hit the reserve

As they say in Texas: Woot...ay esta! And Jonny Rotesserie is in it...this one could get out of control???

I havent followed along with the whole thread... where are you at with the scoring system?

1. We will pick the amount of teams that will "move on" from each location. For example...region 1: Pick 7 teams

2. If a team that you picked moves on to the Regionals, you will get the amount of points that they were seeded (1st seed = 1 point, 15th seed = 15 points).

3. Rank them in order...if the team that you thought would win - does...you get a x3 bonus. If the team that you think will take reserve does...you get a x2 bonus. Therefore, if IQue wins it would be 1 (seed) x 3 for a total of 3 points. A 15th seed wins, it would be 45 points. It is worth taking a few fliers.

4. We will add up all of the points from each location and reward. We will add up the points from all 20 locations and reward.

:thumb:

I love being an outlier!

For the Sams Club it seems like too many picks, at least for the 1st round. Pick 10/30 teams? I think we should change it to pick 5 teams for the 1st round. This forces us to make some tough choices and would probably create more separation in the point totals

Region 5 you will pick 10 teams

We are gonna pick exactly how many teams are going to advance from each location. I agree 10 is too many for the first round.

It would be easier to manage...what do the people think?

I like the every location...then every region. It is more work, but if it is every region...the same 5 names are probably going to get selected for a lot of regions.

This allows for a lot more separation and interaction.

So the question is:
Option 1: Select X number of teams before the comps start that you think will make it to the regionals. This is more of a quicker version that is easier to follow, but not as much involvement.

or

Option 2: Select X number of teams from all (20 comps). This requires more time and attention from everybody, but gets people interested in all of the results and all of the teams.

Let's hear it from you all.
